I have not had a problem with the Buddy heater I bought in 2017. Used mostly for 10 minute warm ups inside the rig, and multi day heating in other areas of the camp. I found it to be cheap and reliable heat, although I light it with a match and not the igniter.

I’ve always thought of getting a Mr. buddy. But I found out that I can warm up the van with two minutes of the little butane stove running. It’s not cheap but I don’t do it very often. Someday I’m going to replace the butane stove with a duel fuel stove.

Early VW used air from around the cylinder fins for heat. Not the exhaust manifold. They were much safer than you would believe.

The ones I was referring to were accessories that were vented gasoline injected burners with their own pump and fan as well as exhaust pipe that were used in aircraft as well. I always wondered why they didn’t remote mount the oil coolers in the cars interior as a heat source.

Later VW's had the exhaust ducting; I had a '69.  I think the problem with the cylinder fin ducting was oil leaks around the cylinder base.

I put a gas heater in mine.  Problem was one leg was hot and the leg next to the door was cold.

I gave my Buddy Heater away.  I didn't like having high pressure propane right next to an ignition source.
