Homemade Side Flares?

Has anyone mad their own side flares to give a little more room when the bed is installed side to side?

I saw a cargo door installed with a hinge at the top and sealed to the outside of the van that basically covered a drawer (Box, slide out?) on slides that allowed room for the sleeper's feet and legs. The back had a lip that sealed to the interior van wall and latches to hold it in place. It was maybe 18" deep.
