Going slower or faster?

Opening the back of topper?

Yeeks!

Slow down a little, and keep the back closed.

I also duck my head to create less wind resistance.   :p

Hide behind something bigger than you ?
This will also work if you need shade..............

It depends on how bad it is.

If it's blowing from the side and you're having trouble controlling your vehicle, get off the road. After all, what's the hurry?

If the big rigs are swerving back and forth, get well off the road and turn your back to the wind (a sand-pitted back window is better than a sand-pitted windshield).

Parking until it dies down prevents being around anything like THIS:

WHEN MOTHER NATURE IS IN A BAD MOOD, GET OUT OF THE WAY!

can you describe the problem/s you are having?

Thanks u guys, the big rigs were swerving a little and I did stop then, it was on 395 before turning off to Barstow, and somewhat in mouve

(so) desert, I think? There were signs about gusty winds and trucks and trailers go slower. I helped alot when I opened the topper slider windows it quit pushing me side to side then. Whew! This is the thing when we travel in areas we did not grow up in, we dont intuitely know. Next time I go through the big wind areas I will check when it blows the most. And I am buying a cover for steering wheel for sweaty hands. Thanks again

Ihad to cut and paste this don't see a remove formating Brad spoke of hope it comes out all right.  Iam still shaky!

when it gets that bad just pull over somewhere and wait it out

check your tire air pressure and when you get the chance have your shocks and suspension checked out

I always just pull off the road in wind and even rain or fog (and yes , snow) if visibility
gets reduced. Now , black ice..............................

YEP! That's 395! Keep in mind that the windiest places are the most open places. When there's nothing to slow the wind within 200 miles, it can really build up some speed! Open desert, flat Midwest, Texas....

Yay! I was hoping that was it, was hoping a native could clue me in!

Once u said that about suspension and tires a paid more attention to vehicle I think alot of play in the wheel is making me feel like I am going to drive straight off a cliff with sharp turns. That's why no one should be too jeolous:) it ain't a picnic out here all the time when u don't have money to keep things up to snuff. But thanks I was coming to conclusion i was too old to hack this anymore!

yea, loose suspension will make things hairy, when you get around others at a camp have someone look under while you move the steering wheel and find out where the play is,a lot of times it's just tie rod ends and most of the time they dont cost much and are easy to replace

all good points.

And one thing I learned after the fact : ) was to research prevailing winds when/if planning a trip that involves a loop of sorts. We drove east on hwy 26 from the coast through Portland, past mt.hood and onto john day and eastern Oregon. We did not experience any winds to speak of in the mts or valleys. Then we turned north and west on i84 going downriver on the Columbia river gorge. YIKES!!! At nearly 10ft tall, our lifted van was seriously buffeted by strong headwinds (it is the sail-board capitol of the west coast) driving home to the coast. Next time we'll go upriver first.

I was wondering if that was possible or to see how bad the crosswinds are for some of the notorious areas for any given day. I remember being buffeted around in a little subaru wagon out there somewhere when I went on my last western driving trip---maybe on a narrow Badlands road---it was scary! It was pre-interwebs back then though. Where were you able to find the information? :exclamation: Definitely would be useful to add to our arsenals. :D

Aww. But you are still at least out there! I'm driving a car that needs transmission work done and needs the power steering replacement work rechecked and I don't have the money for either. It concerns me, as I'm sure it concerns you, about being out there with very limited funds. My funds aren't going to grow where I am so I'll have a better chance for positive changes if I can get on the road. According to my Doctor I was out to pasture in my early 40s so too old is relative. :p I refused to believe him and am trying hard now a decade and change plus plus later to still not believe him.

I hope that I manage to hook up with the tribe like you have been doing. :)

This just gives current conditions, but combining it with a traditional weather map one can determine how things are moving.  You can click to zoom in, place cursor on map to see wind speed and direction.

Just wish they would add Canada wind patterns to the map.

Yes at least we have the money we would.have been paying for housing when we are out here it does help. Are u going to be able to go to rtr? Also depending where u or anyone lives u could.come out and camp for a bit and meet people.

I think us middle age and older women may grow in leaps and bounds. I ended up parking next to woman who I was meeting for first time that I met on forum by accident! We are for sure cut from the same clothe! Another woman is coming out tomorrow, talked.to diane, dragonfly, more than I ever could.have hoped for! Any chance u could meet up? I have been working on tjaybird also ? thanks for support!
