I run used motor oil in the ambo all the time. 50/50 with diesel in the summer and 70/30 in the winter. Just make sure it is filtered! Also make sure it is not synthetic! I tried synthetic once and ended up draining the tank, it ran like crap.

Was the oil there to provide top end lubrication, or just to extend fuel mileage and use up old oil? Any effects on the injectors over time? How abt effects on more modern "computer controlled" diesels?

Perhaps this would be an option for my Cat rather than just dumping the old oil out.

Thanks!

Unless it was an older mechanical diesel I would not even try. My international has standyne old school mechanical injectors driven by a Bosch injection pump. I filter it and use it as fuel, I hate to waste it. My ambo holds 7 gallons of oil in the engine and 3 gallons of 50w oil in the transmission.

Baloo, thanks for the advise!

I have done some research on the web and I agree with you. With the older mechanical engines it would be no problem; with proper filtering, etc, it's probably a good thing. Smoother running and quieter engines are typical results.

Newer, "computer" engines, forget using used oil in the fuel. Too much downside; with significantly higher fuel pressures and smaller injector nozzle sizes you're asking for problems.

If I had a mechanical engine I'd do it for sure! With my C15 Cat, I'll continue to tote my waste oil to Auto Zone for disposal.

Good, thought provoking topic; I enjoyed leavening more abt it!

I agree, with the older mechanical engines you have a lot of options what you can run for fuel. with the computer controlled engines I would only run diesel. highdesertranger

I always use the filters with the grippy sand paper-y end to them. Spin on by hand, spin off by hand.

Might be different if your oil change interval is 10k...

I have probably every oil filter removal gadget made up till 2005, oil filter pliers get %99.999 of my use
