Holy S on top of that the filter would not budge, finally bought a channel lock type wrench chewed up the filter but got her loose. Rotella 5-40 17 bucks a gallon. OK I feel better now.

No negative waves man, always with the negative waves! One of my favorite movie mechanical quotes.

Rotella works for me; my only problem when I do my own changes on my Peterbilt Motorhome is getting rid of 15 gallons of used oil. Been dumping it for free at Auto Zone, but it's kind of a hassle to haul it.

The draining part of the task is not too bad. Found a shallow 17 gallon tray on eBay with wheels to roll it out from under. It also has a small 12VDC pump to empty the tray into my 5 gallon jugs.

The field expedient fix is usually to drive a screwdriver, chisel, or punch through the filter body to provide the needed leverage.

Believe that was "negative ENERGY".  "Again with the negative energy, Moriarty?"

Love that movie!

hahaha I just noticed this. Wagoneer you put quartz in your crankcase, that would be kinda hard on your engine. highdesertranger

12 quarts in a 360? is that stock? or does it have a aftermarket pan or oil cooler or both?

12 quarts!?!? What the heck? My Dodge 5.9 takes a bit under 5 quarts.

I read that screwdriver trick in the Dodge forum I was this close to doing that. I found it easier to attack the filter from the top and needed to remove one of the batteries to get some room. you guys have a good night.

How often do you change the oil? is it a inline 6?

Hi Wagoneer-

"Service Intervals" are 10,000 miles. Includes all the routine normal stuff: oil, grease, all filters, inspection of brakes, hubs, clutch, etc, etc. I use Rotella 15w-40 Dino oil. I have thought abt switching to synthetic oil and extending the service interval but that stuff is really expensive, and because the engine is approaching a million miles I like the idea of getting the old oil out and new stuff in. I drive this vehicle only abt 10,000 miles per year so this works out to an oil change in late fall each year before the snow flies (until I come to RTR in 2018!).

Yes, the motor is an inline six; a Cat C-15 (6nz) 550 hp. Runs like a top.

By the way, I always enjoy your posts.

Thank you they do get me in hot water now and again , that 10,000 per year is close to my milage maybe I should think along those lines. I am not full time and probably when I sell the old home would consider it, just this getting old thing gets in the way.

As high up on the engine as a Cummins has the filter, I'm afraid the screwdriver trick would just make a mess. I use my extra large channel locks and reach through between the frame and the inner fender liner to loosen, then reach way up there from below to spin it off. I ran Rotella in my Ford - been running Dello 400 in my Cummins - seriously the only reason is because the Dello smells better - their both good oils. I tried the synthetic route in my Ford. It developed leaks that went away when I switched back to Rotella - no idea why. I ran synthetic in the gear boxes and diffs with no issues. I didn't feel comfortable with the extended oil changes anyway without regular testing.

I had a oil filter one time that had like a big nut on the bottom so you could remove it with a socket and ratchet.
I don't remember where  i got it and have'nt seen one like
it since.

15 gallons, dang. Maybe one of our tribe, LowTech would want it as fuel.

I run used motor oil in the ambo all the time. 50/50 with diesel in the summer and 70/30 in the winter. Just make sure it is filtered! Also make sure it is not synthetic! I tried synthetic once and ended up draining the tank, it ran like crap.
