Greetings, from Mesa, AZ!!

Been visiting this site and watching videos for a good while. 3 yrs ago I had a vision of buying 40 acres of off grid AZ land, for a headquarters spot, a large 4x4 flatbed truck for transporting necessities to said spot that would also have a slide on camper for extended self sustainable camping in more remote areas. I envisioned the 40 acres as a potential community, small community, and wanted a truck capable of heavy work.

Found the truck, 1999 Ford F450 4x4 dually, single cab, diesel, manual trans and it had just over 100k original miles. Flew to Denver and drove it back to Phoenix.

At that time I had a partner and while not totally invested she was open minded. Things change...fast forward to one year ago, the coupleship changed to where we went our separate ways and it happened quickly. I had been acquiring and storing tools, etc., for the homestead and had a garage full of stuff. Well, the house was hers and after 8 years together I had to move everything to 10x20 storage. Aargh!! ANOTHER storage room.

For the past year, I've been slowly switching gears and goals, living in an apt whittling down my material possessions while more and more embracing minimalism. Omg, I had NO idea how much identity I had tied up in my 'stuff'. My finances changed pretty drastically, as well, and so the pace of preparing has been slow.

I did find a 1988 Bigfoot  fiberglass camper, it needs a lot of upgrading, but got it sitting on the truck now. However, living in a 2nd story apt I have no way to work on the truck/camper here. So, I've acquired this 'n that, Renogy 40 amp solar controller, Magnum charger/inverter, 12v fridge/freezer, Trojan batteries x2 and assorted camping equipment.

I'm now at the point where I'm going to have to go somewhere to work on my upgrades and since the day to day living arrangements are not that grand I have set the intention to finalize my 'letting go' stuff, down to a 5x10 storage room, just loading up everything I've go and stay in the moment letting the Universe provide.

I can't even load all my stuff on the truck because I don't have safe parking. Already broke my truck window, stole stuff and tried to steal my brand new dual fuel generator, cutting one of my tie down chains and, get this, the copper gas line to my furnace.  But not gonna sweat the small stuff.

Within the next two weeks I intend to be on the road, a huge work in progress. :), visiting National Parks (got my Senior Pass last yr) and BLM land guided by intuition and temperature, lol.

Hope to meet some of you kindred spirits!!

Peace,
Marcus

Welcome Marcus to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you. highdesertranger

Marcus, hang in there, it gets better. Consider this rough spot training for mobile life (it's always **something**).

See you down the road!

The Dire Wolfess

I was feeling a bit sorry or myself, today after having been stung multiple times by wasps at a rest area. I was able to peer through the slits of my swollen eyes to read your introduction, Marcus. It reminded me of how resilient folks in here are. I popped a Benadryl and pitched my tent. I'm going o sleep it off. And then I'm going to get up and move. I have a destination.

Thank you!

+1, Marcus - for resiliency!

HI and I know you are in for grand adventures coming your way.
By the seat of your pants is not a bad maneuver either :) some of the best times in my life have been when there were no plans, being very unsure of my next move and kinda 'just out there' and I wouldn't give up those times for all the tea in China :) :) Stay strong! You got this!

Hi Marcus . . . I got my National Parks pass last year too . . . visiting the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest in Arizona, then Zion . . . and hope to use it a lot more in 2019 and beyond.

Welcome, I'm jealous of your truck.  Hope I run into you out there.  I feel your pain on the sudden downsizing, but boy is it nice when you get it under control.  I started to say done but don't know if that ever happens.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I, probably like a lot of us, am a solitary creature by nature and have learned to go it on my own but it's nice to get some empathy and a "you can do it!"...lol

Actually, Roamer, I did a long road trip a year and a half ago based on a premise from the book "Celestine Prophecy", being guided by intuition and synchronicity and it was an awe inspiring trip. I'm intending to do this the same way. Thanks for the welcome

Cool! You have experience and know the great side of wonderful travel!  Rock on!

Hi Marcus,

Oh my God, I just realized you are new here too! So, we are welcoming each other! J

I am a solitary creature too as you described yourself, and like yourself, right now, this very moment getting rid of tons of stuff, posting “For Free” ads on Craiglist and making trips with donations to charity stores.

You sure got a kick-ass truck!

Like another member told you, you clearly are resilient, which is the biggest asset any person can have!

Hi Marcus,  Your attitude and ability to change course, is inspiring.  I just missed out on a rig that would have been perfect, kitchen and all.  Now I'm left with trying to outfit my tiny SUV.

Thanks for telling your story. BTW How difficult is it to get a senior pass?

Hey Max & Sophie,
I don't think I'm allowed to post links yet but if you google "Changes to the Senior Pass" you can read up.
I got it last yr right before the price increase and all I did was pull up to a National Forest entrance stop, gave the NF ranger my money and ID and there it was. Gave it to me right there, iirc.

Thanks for the kind words.

Haha, yeah, tbh, I have very limited camping experience other than some weekend tent camping. Very little of which I've done in the last 30 yrs so I'm definitely a newcomer to this way of life.
But, I've been a solitary seeker type all my life, travelled by auto across the country. Back pre-internet days I used to travel about 40k miles annually setting up at vinyl record collector conventions selling collectible vinyl. Back then I'd load up for a place completely unknown to me with just a road atlas, a good dose of adventure and take off. Me and about 2000 records, lol.

I imagine that I'll wind up being a fringe dweller among fringe dwellers even in this niche. Solitude and nature are my Church but being loosely connected with kindred souls is a priority for me.

Btw, I tend to be tangential and ramble sometimes. :)

Thanks for the compliments and maybe we'll meet up sometime!

Hi. Thanks for the reply.  I don't think there's a National Forest near me, so I guess I'll have to search for one and go on an excursion. :D
Your mention of collectible records is interesting.  I have a HUGE chest full.  Is the convention still operating?

Welcome MaTaLa!

Sorry to hear about the theft. Glad you are on the road now and safe. I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures.

Hi Max, the pass is available via mail as well but I think there's an extra charge iirc.
The record collector conventions are fewer w/ the advent of the internet but in large metro areas they're still around. I just donated about 2,000 records during my downsizing. A very small percentage of records are really collectible other than for nostalgic reasons.

Best to you.

How about a collection of old 78s from the 1920s through 1940s ... about 500 of them - would that have any value? My father left us his record collection and it looks like my siblings want me to take it on.
