This thread has really caused me to look back and think of all the "small places" I created as a child and young adult:
Forts made from card tables and blankets or cardboard boxes. Tree houses or even pits dug in the back yard and covered with wood planks. I remember pruning the brush from the inside/middle of the growth so I had living fort to play in.
Sometimes I would crawl into the bow of my dad's old, wooden sailboat (no cabin, just wood planks and stowed gear) or explore the crawl spaces in the attic.
Crawling around under the house was tons of fun until a family of skunks moved in. For a while I was sleeping in a little, wooden 6x8' shed my dad had built in the backyard. It was incredibly leaky of air and I would often wake up to find large, hairy spiders on the walls, but it was heaven to have a small, cozy space to sleep in. I even installed a CB base station to wile away the hours late at night, talking to people I would never meet.
When I was older and got into restoring cars, I used to love being under the car on stormy nights, sheltered under my project. I'd lean pieces of plywood against the sides of the car to block the wind and blowing rain (a little), working away the hours, cozy in the warmth of the trouble-light.
To this day my favorite weather to car-camp in is during rain storms, the more wind the better.
There's just something extra nice about being in the van when I can hear the rain and wind outside.
Great thread. Thanks for giving me a place to relive those old memories.
