The total transition to self driving vehicles should take awhile. At least we have the chance to roam relatively freely now.

And the NFS/BLM backroads are still open to live on for now.

These 2 things are possible now.

Slight thread drift.:)

If people could step away from media bombardment, take a breath, stop being scared all the time, and just learn to live on less, they would all be happier. Listening to the news scream "the sky is falling" 24/7 is soul deadening, think for yourself, eat and live simply, even if you can't do a van down by the river you can still simplify and get by on far less than you're taught you need. We're not facing the end of the world, it's all just evolving like it always has only this time with completely biased round the clock full color and sound.

Must Have Media!!  And donuts!

If land prices would stabilize, then rents would follow, and people could afford to survive.

I was reading where all the building restrictions have driven up rents and prices to where it is unreasonable.  A few greedy are making it hard on everyone else.

2) Look for a combination of robots and layoffs.  If McDonalds is only half as busy, they can get by with at least 40% less help.  That's just an example, in nice round numbers.

Part of that comes directly from fewer sales, but even at lower volumes, $15/hr for kitchen labor will justify at least a few robots in every restaurant.

KFC just opened their first restaurant this week in China where computers take orders. In the next few years I bet there will be fast food restaurants in US where computers take orders.

I think $15 an hour would be hard to have a decent life on in California. Most people with a trade or self employed were making more than that 20 years ago.

"Minimum Wage" was never intended to be a "living wage" one can raise a family on.  One is supposed to get education and skills to progress to better paying jobs.  The intention has, of course, been derailed.  Thanks, political correctness, again.

Not really true, FDR intended it to be a living wage.

Queen,I researched the minimum wage and found you are right.FDR meant it to be a wage a family could live on.It took him 5 years to get it through congress and the SCOTUS.Every time an increase in the minimum wage is proposed, the wealthy scream about how they will go broke and the country will go tits up.Of course it never happens.

I agree with ALL of you!! Capitalism is ultimately self-destructive and will end in a collapse. But nothing else works

And that brings me to the basic premise of this website:

This is a sinking ship with no hope, time to drop out and live the best possible life way you can--the life of a nomad.
Bob

And if/when the ship finally does sink,  it's going to be you nomads that adapt and fare the best!  Ahh,  time to ramp up some changes to get towards that lifestyle.

Ronald Raegan gave us "trickle-down economics" which the wealthy thought was wonderful. The government gave them outlandish tax breaks to stimulate the economy and create jobs. It did neither; the wealthy just put 90% of the money in their pockets.

History has proven that trickle-down doesn't work and never will work, regardless of which party or which talking head is saying otherwise.

There's no doubt it's way easier to make money if you have money therefore its much easier for the wealthy to get wealthier. However, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to improve their lifestyle if they choose to do so.

I have a family member who always complains that his job sucks, he doesn't make enough money, can't afford this or that and how wealthy people are sticking it to him. I always ask him why he doesn't go to college it's only $300 a month. He says he can't afford it. I say cut back on your ultimate satellite package, mega bandwidth internet, unlimited wireless everything, eating out, drinking beer and going to sporting events. He says wtf I have to live. I say if you sacrifice for 3-4 years you can improve the rest of your life and be happpier. Then he says he's too old and doesn't have the patience. I say well the opportunity is always there you just have to choose to use it.

Personal responsibility is a hard thing for most people to accept; Its just easier or more convenient to blame "them" or the "system".

I blame my parents.

If they hadn't had me, I wouldn't have any problems. :p

I'm all for better pay,  but this 15 an hr in CA hurts all mom & pop's business that are trying to survive, that don't rise prices to past it along to the customers.
Two things will happen, 1. small mom & pop business will have to shut down as they cant survive &/or pay people to work or 2. the mom & pop will have to work it 7days a week 10 +hrs a day to barely survive. Shaking my head what this world is coming to..........

Kinda funny. When the first federal minimum wage was created in 1938 at $.25 there were immediately naysayers declaring it the end of the country.Likewise, every increase in the MW since.Don't worry,be happy. We'll be Ok.

of course we will be ok, we don't work for minimum wage. I haven't worked for minimum wage since the 60's. highdesertranger

like i said before alot of business will go under or they will go automated so they won't have to pay the 15.00 minimum wage!!! though as a business owner if i'm paying someone minimum wage it's NOT my problem if they can't afford to live on what i pay them as minimum wage was never intended to be a salary for someone to live on and start a family.. now why don't some of the low wage workers go to college and get a degree or some kind of trade that they can use to make more money??

I will withold my personal feelings, and just post this point of law.

The FLSA exempts small businesses that do less than $500,000 in sales from observing federal minimum wage law. This provision aims to abate the effects that a minimum wage has on extremely small businesses, such as home mailing businesses. Minimum wage also helps businesses by allowing tipped workers to earn a lower-than-normal federal wage.
