I did this a few years ago, I got clever and thought what if I could basically get a greyhound bus pass ($500 for 2 months nearly unlimited rides in that time) and go all over the country to take city photos, basically sleeping in the bus? Well, I did just that. I went to over 20 cities and stopped every few days in a motel, but I kept everything in my backpack and took a scooter with me (a Razor A5 kick scooter, adult size.) I miss those days actually, taking a bus ride to the next city in the evening, and arriving at the next city in the morning, having everything I needed in a backpack and small camera bag. I would make sure to go to cities that were around 6 hours away by bus, so I could get adequate sleep. The only bad part was going on day long trips, that really sucked. Other than that (as well as having to use public restrooms), it was awesome and part of the reason why I am more open to vandwelling.

Greyhound had this discovery bus pass for $560 right now (unlimited rides, except between two cities for more than 2 times I think), and Greyhound is going to discontinue selling the bus pass October 1st (supposedly because of their focus on their new Greyhound Express service with reserved seating), for me it was so awesome just showing the bus pass at the ticket desk and getting a bus ticket to go to the next city, and not having to worry about driving and just sleep on the bus.

Just wanted to share that.

Sounds like a pretty neat experience. Any photos to post?

I have been on my last Greyhound bus ride I hope, been cross country on it and many other places...but I will say that one of the best bus rides I have ever taken was a cross country Green Tortoise bus trip. It was 30 years ago but they are going strong, the buses mostly newer than they were and not just a bus trip any more but more of an adventure type trip...

My trip was amazing....it was the hotsprings and national Parks southern trip and after several naked ht springs soaks with the 20+ riders, there are few games left and you become pretty good friends with each other....

It is interesting to see the Central American trips and Baja trips...Alaska..lots of good fun and you lay down to sleep...

Google Green Tortoise if you care...

Kind of a plug but I have no vested interest I just enjoyed it immensely and the food is good...lol
Bri

hey Bri, what a great idea the bus adventure, seems Green Tortoise is the way to go... Prices, adventure, and all included price makes for a grand vacation... I even looked in at working for them as a camp host but alas that position does not exist YET!!!

Thanks for the heads up, I may get to Alaska or S. America yet...

That sounds kind of cool. Anybody ever thought of doing this on Amtrack?
-Bruce

I really like that idea. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for sharing the insight.

that sounds really cool XD how old were you at the time and what year?

Did the Greyhound pass in the early 70's, it was great at the time, now I prefer my own space and the luxury of changing course on a whim....And I can choose my riders too.

I traveled the northeast and canada via greyhound. The experience was hit or miss. The problem i see with this is now a days, the buses tend to stop in some pretty rough neighborhoods.
