I went to a community college. Community colleges are of course known for being cheap. Yet some courses had *mandatory* textbooks which were published by the school. These textbooks were literally just compilations of other old textbooks. One could have bought the used textbooks for $10-$20 themselves but instead the school would produce new versions each year and make them required at $200 per issue. Someone oughta be strung up by the balls for this sort of blatant scam.

When I went to community college, the cost of my textbooks regularly exceeded my tuition. The whole academic publishing industry is out of control.

Wish people would be brave and think global economy. Move to another country. Establish citizenship with a good job. Use their laws to discharge debts in old country, maybe. Pure speculation on my part. But if you have no chance to get out of debt you need to change the rule book.

I went to Scottsdale Community College (CC) in 1985 with the intent to continue to NAU, and my son went to the same CC a few years ago. I ended up working in a growing industry and didn't need to go back. Had I stayed in the 4 years, and gotten my EE, I'd have ended up drawing lines for half what I was making in a few years after graduation as I'd have missed the opportunity I had and probably not be where I am, now (Self employed) My son actually got a better education in his field in the CC as opposed to ASU and is working in his field, albeit freelance (tv/movie production) and doing better than his peers, with money in his bank account and no debt at all. It doesn't hurt he has my old truck, but 15 year old cars are better today than they were in 1985!!!

I dunno, I had some pretty awesome 20 year old cars in the 80s
Some of them I still kick myself for selling

Books may be part of it. But I think he biggest cost increase comes from ballooning college admins, often growing by 40% or more, sometimes, it seems, just to employ graduates with otherwise useless degrees. What do they need with a $65,000 a year (plus other employee costs) Director of Greek Life? Now, with talk about free college, it looks like colleges will be trying to tap the endless pockets of the taxpayers. No. Just no.
