Cannot figure this out by myself, in the 60's most all my female friends had hair on the legs and I thought nothing about it why is it so important to feel the need to shave your legs it just seems un-natural. and a waste of time. I talked to a woman friend and she just said "that's gross" ??

Hairy legs are unsightly especially if one is dressed up and wearing sheer hosiery.  Nothing fine about seeing crushed hairs.    If wearing opaque tights, the hairs are all sticking out and looking tacky, if not dorky.  Hairy legs under these circumstances can cause ingrown hairs which are even worse looking as well as painful.
Some women are born without hairy bodies like many Hawaiian and Japanese.  Some women have fine, sparse hair or light colored hair, so maybe not a prob for them.  But for those with darker, thicker, or coarser hair, it just feels better without.  Shaving or waxing only takes a few minutes.  Hairy legs are not an expression of freedom or feminism or anti-establishmentarianism.    just my opinion, mind.

I'm just still trying to figure out the correlation between being hairy, not wearing deodorant and saving the rain forest. The first two don't seem to affect the third but they always go together.

It's being "natural". ;)

I do like the no deodorant aspect. I don't like antiperspirants either, they are poisonous. For me, I've found that if you eat organic, as much as can with lots of fruits and veg, water, and with little to no processed food (the REAL KILLER), a person does not stink, rarely gets sick and thus can be around to benefit from saving the rainforests. Perhaps the hairy part is in sympathy with the rainforest animals losing their habitat?

For us at the time it was about smell's and what you put in your body, good point none of my hairy girlfriends wore miniskirts more long flowing skirts
and the ones that wore mini skirts had shaved/waxed legs. We all do have a natural odor and saying that not all are offensive. My PERSONAL OPINION is anatomy differences differentiate our perception of odor. Thank you for your opinions

Believe it or not, it's all advertising. People didn't do these thing until advertiser told them they needed to spend their money on it.

I am assuming it is a fashionable trait, cannot see any health related reasons.   ? (do not like linking others opinions above mine)

Give 'em the razor sell 'em the blades...

why would it be any more natural to shave your face, or less of a waste of time? it is my understanding that most or a large number of young folk male and female also shave their genitals these days for hygiene reason.

When I was in high school and college (late '60's/early '70's) most girls liked hairy chests on guys.
With mine smooth and hairless I was too embarrassed to take my shirt off at a pool or beach party!
By my late twenties I had a proud hairy chest but no time to show it off.
Now in my sixties I have to shave it or risk being taunted by the young'ens on the beach!
My personal experience has been that it's WAY more about fashion and style than hygiene when it comes to hair.
People don't like any hair any more!
I have a beard that I keep trimmed and short since I'm still working.
Still I'm amazed at how many women HATE it and can't believe I don't shave it off.
Many women who are actually impressed that I live life barefoot think I should shave my beard as well as the rest of my body!
They understand the natural/minimalist aspect of my shoeless ways, but think full body shaving is the way to go.
I'll never understand fashion's fickleness.

Why is it that ewomen are trained to think of their natural bodies as inadequate or gross?

I think some of you spend too much time worrying about what others think you should do with your body hair.
My opinion?  Humans are mammals and covered in hair.
If you don't like hairy legs/faces/chests/backs/armpits, then avert your eyes while you ponder your narrow cultural expectations.  Another time, another place and you'd be thinking the hairless folks look like prepubescent freaks.

It's not a matter of inadequacy or perceived grossness. It's about feeling good. To each their own, yes?

Exactly. Why does who and what we are make us not feel good?

Hair has advantages as well as disadvantages.
I have very little head hair left so every other week or so I give it a quick buzz with a $20 trimmer.
Many advantages over having hair, but I do need sun protection.
I wear hats I pick up for free at event and $2.99 bandannas.
So many young guys with full heads of hair shave their heads for convenience or because they like the look.
Back in the day NOBODY that wasn't in the millitary did that here in the U.S.!
In high school we had a baseball coach that required crew cuts on the players.
Half of the team quit rather than be seen buzzed like that.......and instead got REALLY buzzed with what had become the new in crowd.

That's less for hygiene reasons than for pleasing their partners, no genital hair = no hair in your mouth when 'going down' on your partner (Hmmm, maybe that is hygiene reasons, in a way)
That was mostly brought into vogue via the hardcore porn industry, where shaving was priginally to give the audience a better view of the action
That said, I did a full body shave once, when I was married, and my now ex wife was NOT AMUSED

"If I wanted to sleep with a prepubescent boy I'd have married one"
:D
