A friend (who arrived here the other day), was in Santa Something (or another), Calif and his rear cam recorded a very clear clip of a guy who carefully unbolted his genny off the rear rack and walked off with his new unit. They flat out told him there was nothing they could (or would) do about it.
A lot of good a video recording does when the LEOs walk away from you cuz you're a transient.

If that had happened to me, I would have taken the video around to all of the local tv stations to see if one of them would have been interested in airing it on the six o'clock news as part of a story about how the local police seem to be falling down on the job. If you light a fire under the bastards, I bet they would have changed their tune in a hurry.

When I put solar on the roof, I intend to replace all the standard nuts and bolts with tamper proof ones. Will that GUARANTEE that no one can steal them? No, of course not. But I want the bastards to have to WORK to get my stuff.

If your buddy had used the tamper proof stuff, I'll bet he'd still have his generator.

Me, paranoid? "It ain't paranoia when they really are out to get you!"

I learned that from the ex-cops I worked with for seven years as an armored car guard.

And now I'm winding down a 25 year career in a juvenile correction facility.

A warm and trusting guy I'm not. But paranoid? Nah.

It's the REST of the world that ain't being realistic about this stuff. I'm normal.

John....Old Gary was a little slow on the uptake with the video of the theft. I think I'd have done just what you suggested.
He had boogered the threads and thought that was good....Not

This old boy is 78 and ya gotta hand it to him, as he's still out here chuggin' up and down the road in his truckcamper. I was a little concerned about him, but he still seems to have his lights burning brightly and both oars in the water. (he's never been on the interwebs) He sure does have lots of good stories to tell tho.
I invited him to RTR next year and he likes the idea of going to his first meet-up after nearly 30 yrs on the road
I hope he makes the trip to Q....I think everyone will like the old coot

...that can't be an easy gig. There are some really messed up young folks out there, and that'd be hard to deal with everyday...for 25 years too!!! WOW!!!

I know I'd have a real hard time doing a job like that. I'm sure it's extremely rewarding at times too....

...but there are those days.....:s


kinda like being a cop. It's a super important tough job that needs to be done...but you couldn't pin a badge on me for a MILLION BUCKS A YEAR!!!!

I'm curious. Was your friend's generator completely enclosed in a container? Or was it exposed? Exposed meaning that someone could clearly see there is a generator there, even though it's bolted down. Personally, I don't leave anything exposed outside the vehicle that I'm not willing to risk theft or loss, but that's just me. Anything of value is either inside, or in some type of fully contained unit that is locked so as not to expose the contents to prying eyes. Heck, I wouldn't even leave a bicycle exposed outside of a vehicle, but I know many people do that regularly, including SUVs, cars, etc. Of course, I'm not saying it's your friend's fault for leaving something valuable exposed outside a vehicle, I was just curious. The only time I've ever seen any theft make the 10:00pm local news is when a house has videotaped the front door showing theft of a UPS package, or maybe a burglary breakin. Otherwise, I've never seen the local news show coverage of any theft of say a generator, bicycle, or even a car for that matter, unless the car was involved in some type of newsworthy crime.

if you can video tape the theft........you definitely are parked in the wrong place alot,.... of course thats why I stay outside of the cities.....the bus doesnt go out that far and the scumbags have to walk!!!!

That's a really good point Caseyc...

"Outta sight, outta mind" is a great, simple way to deter a theif. If they don't know whacha got, then they're alot less likely to steal it, huh!

A good coverbox may well have saved your friend's genny...not to mention protect it from something possibly bashing into it too.
Damn...a good generator is expensive too!! Bummer.

Gray's genny had a sound deadening box over it. The lock was twisted till the hasp broke. The thief was seen sitting on the box as he worked at the bolts that had crimped threads. He took his time while Gary was in the hospital getting some blood work done.
Anyone walking by might have assumed the guy was the owner by his casual manner in the video, where he even waved at someone passing.
When I saw the vid, I thought to myself that I wouldn't have suspected theft unless I saw him walk away with the genny.
The guy was pretty slick about the whole thing.

Unlocked, keys in ignition 90% of the time lol. I am very rural tho...there has been times i locked down, when i didn't like what or whom was around.

In our last rig we had a small electrical box which my husband installed in the area with other such things, inside the RV, but this box wasn't hooked up to anything live... it was hooked up to a fake wire, though. It unscrewed easily and it's where we kept some extra cash and things like that. Haven't figured out quite such a good place for our recently purchased rv, but I'm sure we will.

I would recommend Mace my friends and I did a little Cop Academy "Training" and with "supervision" we shot each other with mace to know how it feels.

Pepper Spray, aka Mace WILL incapacitate anyone who hasn't experienced it.
The pain lingers on for hours and it's cheaper than buying a handgun.

In the Navy I have been through the 'gas chamber' with the weakened teargas - had the danged bucket right next to me spraying upwards. Whoowee, I hated that. But from what I have read it's nothing compared to a good dose of Mace! :s

I'm redoing my rv and built new storage doors on the outside compartments out of plywood and added steel angle to edges.
I then installed 2 house quality deadbolts to each door.
Main door was rebuilt using new wood so now it's solid.Showed a friend what i did and he said it would take a chainsaw to get in. Then i told him i put galvanized sheet metal between the layers of plywood.
Used two deadbolts keyed both sides on this door. Eliminated a couple of windows using sheet aluminum.Will either pay for murals or just leave it.
Kitchen window put a stainless steel oven rack over it.
Passenger door in cab has been disabled by pulling the linkage in door off. I also covered the window w/ a steel mesh product.
On drivers door the inside lock was removed. Only locks from outside.
I also devised a way to screw a bolt from under van into a hole in bottom of door for when i'm away
I made it as hard to break in as possible and if they get in they have to work hard to get anything out. Camper door is keyed both sides.
And i keep a stun gun by door next to a can of hornet spray that shoots up to 25'.
Then theirs my 12 gauge shotgun...........................................
