I took advantage this morning to see a van I saw a few days before at a dealer. No one around, so I went up to it, I then tried the door. IT was unlocked as was another van. Yes, I could have stolen them with ease (If I knew how to do it, which I don't)  and driven them away.

Ever have that occur (If you wanted to see a vehicle without ANY pressure) to you?

No, I didn't lock them up, but I sure won't be buying from this dealer, One van had the side doors damaged (You could feel the shift as you closed it) and they wanted $6,995 and the other one books for a bit much for my interest (Plus, they are at a "Buy here/pay here place" which is notorious for excessive interest.

I  would bet you were being video recorded which is not a bad thing but I would not be getting in and out of unlocked vehicles especially at a tote the note lot.

Anything wrong with the car and they could come back on you. That's just my cynical side talking but there are a lot of unscrupulous people among that ilk. JMHO

I encountered that when I bought my new van. It was unlocked so I went right in and started checking out the interior. It was much easier to do weird stuff like lay down in the back and closely examine the undercarriage, door openings, seat comfort, stuff like that without anyone watching me and asking questions.

Eventually someone did come out and see if I was already being helped.

If they are newer cargo vans not much to steal.  I think hot wiring them is a bit tougher with the chipped keys.

Not really that big of a deal and cars get left open.  There are hundreds of cars on the lot(probably) and they get moved a lot  by numerous people.  Things happen.

What bothers me more is when I leave my vehicle to get work done on it and the shop/dealer leaves the vehicle unlocked on the lot with the key in it.... seems to be how they all do it for their own convenience.

I agree with what others are saying.
If no-one is at the lot I'd either wait for someone to appear or I'd come back later. Cameras or someone writing down your plate number might prove to be uncomfortable.
I'd ask myself, what would I tell an Officer that was called in because of someone seen on private property, walking around, opening doors on vehicles.
I typically see a sign on car lots that state, no trespassing on off-hours. Its more of an insurance thing but why tempt fate.

Yes! I left my motorhome for repairs and repeatedly told them too please keep it looked; it's my home. They kept leaving it unlocked. Grrr.
