Am wanting to plan for a van used for stealth camping, that can be parked in an airport, above ground (not garage) long term parking. What models of van could you put in that area, where you could climb in. shut off the lights, and go to sleep. Without TSA or local LEOs freaking out?

Any ideas? Got a feeling that these areas have cameras all over them, and the LEOs (think its there jurisdiction at many airports) would quickly visit you if you did not leave the van, or drive the van away after you entered it.

maybe a better idea to map out the nearest walmart, drive there via GPS and park and sleep?

I think having a van at an airport for any length of time is a bad idea, with the terrorism worries and all those 'report suspicious activity' signs blinking everywhere. I believe they are very sensitive about that kinda thing near airports.

Airport parking these days typically has cameras all over the place and regular security patrols. You think the local cops hassle folks for sleeping in strip mall parking lots? Try it at an airport of any size!

Personally, I'd just as soon avoid contact with the DHS.

Just my little opinion --- tremendous mistake ---

I agree with the other posters offroad, but I am curious as to why you would want to do that?

When I fly somewhere I have to drive 140 miles one way to Albuquerque or El Paso so if a flight leaves fairly early I will drive up and go to a private parking area...there are usually several around the airport...in Alb they cost about $3 a night for extended parking, and I sleep in my van the night before the flight and catch the shuttle to the airport an hour or so before the flight. Otherwise, unless you work at an airport, why would you want to stay there?

I have parked overnight at small out of the way airports and many have campsites since small plane owners often stop in an airport like that while on a trip and sleep the night. I had a pilot friend in Alaska who flew from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska to Florida and back and spent every night camped under his wing in some tiny airstrip.

We had a member here for some time, Jim Forman, who talked about using small airports for boondocking while on the road...
Bri

have a friedn who does in fact work for the airlines and needs a cheap place to stay. am trying to help them with all alternatives.

off site long term parking sounds like a good option at $3 a night.

Well - thats a little different -- I would ass-u-me he would have some kind of I/D --- that might cut him a little slack

If they work there, don't they have an employees parking lot? If so maybe they can arrange with the airport to park longterm there...

I think it is better to be upfront about it and then there is no question.

I am sure the long term private lot would not let me park there and live in the rig...it is just for one night on the way out and one on the way back.

Bri

yes just a single overnight place to sleep.

I realize this is an old post but some airports have remote parking and I doubt they will be looking for anything more than car theives and break ins. DFW airport has public remote parking and private ones as well. Many will send shuttles to your car to pick you up to take you to the airport. No problem catch a shuttle back to the car, hopefully with a different driver. None are security threats to the airport so most of the terrorist threats mentioned are not applicable.

I don't know how it is at the airport in question, but in major cities there are usually remote parking lots run by companies not affiliated with the airport. I imagine the security at those is much more relaxed. Of course, they're also less convenient.
