So if I was to use a Renogy suitcase panel or two, as shown in one of Bob's vids, what do I do with the battery in the winter? I'm assuming it's not great to leave the batteries outside all day?

Build a little box lined with some pink foam?

Totally wiring the rig isn't probably going to happen until next year

I have a TT. My batteries sit outside in battery boxes year round. No issues. I also use a solar suitcase and I love it! I can park in the shade and get plenty of solar.

what type of batteries and what temps do you expect over the winter? highdesertranger

Unsure of the type of batteries at this time to be totally honest. I would prefer AGM, but just when I think I've got that part figured out I'll read where FLA are better and I'll be off again.

As to temps, generally typical New England weather, so...figure mostly 25 F and above, occasionally lower. If I get in the RV I still probably won't be able to go too far south or west for various reasons.

Blanch thanks for the reply, what sort of temps are you in and is the box insulated?

The box is not insulated. I camp occasionally in the 30’s but mostly 50’s and above. I try to follow the warmer weather. I have camped in areas where the temp went over 100. But I try to avoid anything over 90 or below 40.

Does your car battery freeze up in winter there?  I have lived in severe climates, way below zero in winter without worrying about batteries freezing, but I bought batteries designed for the cold. A battery that loses it's charge could freeze, but a good battery will not freeze.
AGM batteries? I do not know.
I have not used AGM batteries because I have heard they are expensive and I am cutting costs.     ~crofter

No, lead batteries do not need temp protection.

They don't perform as well below freezing is all.

But then same with the panels when the sun gets low.
