Taking the plunge!!!

So I have been dreaming about a life on the road for years, but I was so attached to my stuff. I have spent the past several years in a "be prepared" mindset and I have collected a lot of stuff. But I find myself in a situation where I have NOTHING holding me here in MN. I have no minor children, no grandkids, no mortgage and it is time for me to move out of my apartment. When faced with the prospect of packing up all of my stuff only to move it to another apartment, it makes me want to throw up! LOL Which brings me to today. I am about to take the plunge today!! Once I get home, I am starting to list everything that I own on craigslist and let it go. I am excited and terrified at the same time! But press on I will! I am so grateful I found this website and I truly hope to be a part of the tribe soon ya'll!!!!!

Welcome to the CRVL forums! Once you start being free of being owned by your 'stuff' it becomes easier to not have what you really don't need than to keep it. Just think of all the hours of dusting and cleaning that you won't have to do!!

Getting rid of the "stuff" was the hardest part of going mobile for me & took a LOT longer than I expected it to take.

Exciting! Go for it! And, I agree with the other person saying that getting rid of stuff can be addicting, at least for some. The weight is lifted from your shoulders, the burden of "stuff" that owns you!

Good for you! I don't regret it at all. As I shared before, I moved into my van out of necessity. Now I live in it because I want to. I had a few anxious moments with letting go of some of my stuff but now it's no problem.

Being owned by my stuff...Seriously that is so much where I am right now. I keep looking at all the things I have purchased and the anxiety I feel at letting them go is REAL!!! Especially when I look at the things I have that used to belong to my dearly departed parents. But press on I will. Fortunately I have family members who will take my parent's things and they will be well cared for. Thank you everyone for the kind and warm welcome!

Some advice:  I would skip Craigslist and just load everything up and take it to The Salvation Army or some other similar organization and just give it away.  I've tried selling things on Craigslist and everyone wants something for almost nothing.

If I was going to do it again I'd load what I'm going to take and "put it in it's place" in the van/rv. Take the stuff I really want to keep that won't fit (photographs, retirement & graduation certificates, etc) to a friends house or a storage locker.

The rest would get a price sticker on EVERYTHING in the place and I'd put an ad on craigslist & the local free papers, "Estate sale, everything goes" and mean it.  Maybe contact a couple of second hand shops to see if they'd be interesting in making an offer on everything before hand. That would save you the hassle of dealing with the general public sale.

The day after the public sale see if any of the charity second hand shops wants everything & is willing to come get it. After that you either take it to the goodwill or the land fill.

Then you get in your rig & start your new life.
