https://www.greencarreports.com/new...-range-extended-electric-powertrain-revealed#As European countries continue to crack down on emissions from road vehicles, automakers are stepping up with solutions to reduce levels of smog-causing nitrogen oxides, especially in city centers.

Ford identified the commercial vehicle segment as one it believes is ripe for electrification, and earlier this month it revealed its Ford Transit Plug-In Hybrid van.

Notably, the electrified powertrain does not use the gasoline engine to power the front wheels—ever.

Instead, the lithium-ion battery pack and Bosch electric motor power the front wheels exclusively, while a 1.0-liter Ecoboost inline-3 gasoline engine works as a range extender to generate electricity that recharges the battery.
That makes it a so-called series hybrid, rather than the more common parallel hybrid used in Ford's Energi plug-in hybrid models.

Ford is keen to point out the gasoline engine is only present to top off the battery pack, which itself will propel the Transit Plug-In Hybrid over 50 kilometers (31 miles) on a single charge on the New European Driving Cycle.

https://www.greencarreports.com/new...-range-extended-electric-powertrain-revealed# With the gasoline range extender, Ford says 500 kilometers (310 miles) is possible, while payload capacity is greater than vehicles powered by a larger and hence much heavier battery pack alone.
The automaker identified the commercial van sector as an important area to introduce the new powertrain, and notes commercial vans make 280,000 trips on a typical day in London.

Therefore, the goal is to reduce emission levels with the electrified Ford Transit, which creates zero emissions when operating in electric-only mode.

Ford Making Big Commitment to Hybrid Pickups

The strategy is part of a broad initiative to rapidly reshape Ford’s product lineup with redesigned and new vehicles. These include a hybrid F-150 pickup truck with an on-board generator to operate tools, and new off-road SUVs such as the Bronco. A Mustang-inspired all-electric crossover also is in the works.

“Being frozen in the past is really a death sentence for a business,” Hackett said.

Hackett said trucks, SUVs and hybrid powertrains are the centerpieces of Ford’s product strategy. The company sees fuel-efficient hybrids as way to protect owners of the type of large vehicles it sells from gasoline price spikes.

Via creates Chevy/GMC hybrid Vans that can get 100 mpg (in limited driving).

The van is based on a Chevrolet Express, but the standard V-8 and transmission are replaced with a complete plug-in powertrain, consisting of a 4.8-liter gasoline V-8, 175-kilowatt electric motor, and 22-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

Via previously estimated the electric-only range at around 35 miles, with a total range of 400 miles on both gasoline and electric power.
Average fuel economy is estimated at 100 mpg in mixed driving, but that "blended" figure assumes the van will be driven no more than 60 or 70 miles on daily use. The more miles driven on gasoline, the lower the effective mpg.

The van also features a 110-volt power takeoff, which allows operators to plug in power tools and other electrical devices.
