I would suggest instead of a renting a storage garage, buy a used enclosed cargo trailer. In the 5x10 to 6x12 size range many used ones can be had for $1000 to $1200, sometimes less if someone really needs to get rid of it. Park it at home if possible, so it's always available and easy to rotate stock. Then have a van or camper on a truck or something like that that you can live in if necessary. In the mean time you have something you can enjoy on weekends and you're not just giving money to someone else for the privilege of using their storage. Also, if a disaster really hits, and you for some reason have to vacate the area, you can take all your preparations with you as simply as connecting the trailer to the tow vehicle and heading out. As long as the trailer is ventilated there is no reason you can store fuel, food, etc in it either.
If you don't have space to keep it at home, then maybe store it in a storage yard - still cheaper than renting a unit in the long run. And more versatile. Before renting space in a yard I'd check with friends and family first and see if someone would let you park it in a corner of their yard.
