Can anyone tell me if my hot water tank has a by-pass? I need to use my newly acquired 2000 Dodge Roadtrek, Versatile, 190 in freezing climate soon. Plan to drain Fresh Water and Hot Water tank (Black tank empty) and use RV antifreeze in Gray Water tank. Do I drain Fresh Water first then Hot Water? How do I keep antifreeze out of Hot H2O tank? Ignorant, NuBe

yes it should have a bypass and a way to drain the water in it. the process depends on what model water heater you have and how it was set up by the manufacturer.

open the door on the out side and find the ID label. that will tell you the make and model. then come back and let us know. also there are several videos on You tube showing how to do this.

what do you need help with on the forum? if you ask specific questions we can help.

My 2000 Roadtrek 200 did not come with a bypass on the water heater. Turn off the water heater (there is a switch on the wall inside for it) and turn off the water pump (switch for it inside too). If you are connected to a shore water source, turn it off and disconnect hose. Open a faucet to relieve the water pressure. My water heater does not have a drain port so the way to drain it is to remove the anode rod. Mine takes a 1-1/16" socket to remove. Let all the water out. This is also a good time to replace the anode rod as they have sacrificial metal to keep from eating the tank walls by electrolysis. Replace the anode after the W/H has drained. I use Teflon tape (found in the plumbing section at your hardware store) on the threads to prevent any leaks. Open the fresh water drain to drain the tank and open all faucets. Press the commode pedal to help drain the water line feeding the commode.
