I just bought some creamy organic peanut butter at WalMart. I usually try to eat organic and healthy, this was the same price as the store brand so I placed it in my basket. I go out to my car/home to make a peanut butter sandwich and notice it's oil is separated. I put on my broken glasses and realize it say stir then refrigerate. Problem is, I don't have a way to keep items cool yet.

My question is, will it be safe to eat as is? I assume so, since it's shelved at room temp.

Thanks,
Niall

I always assumed that Peanut butter was to stay out of the frig. It gets to hard to spread otherwise. Peanuts dont need to stay in the frig...so. But jelly does. Not sure about the natural ones as the standard ones come with preservatives which can stay good for months.

Make yourself a poor mans root cellar. Use that spot in the woods where you used to crash if need be. Dig a hole and stash your food in there to keep it cool.

I've never refrigerated jelly, not did my mom when I was growing up. Now that I think about that, it's weird. You'd think all that sugar would make it like a Petri dish. Never had it mold or go bad once.

When it separates, that's normal. Stir it up, and eat it Next time you are at the store, look, and you will see lots of peanut butters needing a good stir.

twokniveskatie: I agree never fridge jam either.

LOTS of processed foods these days have so many preservatives in them, you can probably keep it out of the fridge for a week or more before it starts to grow gross things

Basically, as long as it's not growing gross things, I'm pretty good. The exception is cheese, all the mold in the world can grow on the outside of the cheese, just cut it off, and keep on eating

With Love,
Tara

Alright thanks guys, I live in the Orlando area. So its a bit cool at the moment. I did not know if it was safe, as I never seen the oils separate. Did not want to risk the runs.

Thanks a bunch!

Niall, that brand of natural peanut butter is all I use. I never refrigerate it and it does not go bad.

I have found that almost anything that will keep in the refrigerator for several weeks, (pickles, olives, mayonnaise, jam, etc.) will keep just fine if it is not allowed to sit in a really hot area in my van, "BUT" only if I am absolutely, positively, totally careful that I DO NOT contaminate it with dirty silverware or my fingers or by leaving it uncovered for any length of time. I love squeeze bottles for any anything that can be used in them. Nice and clean.

Now that I know its safe and jelly can be kept out of the fridge. I will buy some squeeze bottle grape jelly, to complete my sandwich... Hopefully by wendsday, if I can get some cash from tip money. Crosses fingers for $20-30.

I agree with all that has been said Niall....I just want to add that if you have a health food store anywhere near you, you might try the kind of PB where you just turn on the machine and it grinds it for you from the nuts in the bin....super fresh, organic and absolutely zero additives not even salt. It is my favorite and I am a bit of a peanut butter fiend...in the words of the trade...YUMMY!
Bri

That sounds delicious, I will look into. I find a PB&J on whole wheat, and a bannana or apple to be a good lunch.

Ditto on Sunn1 - Smuckers/Laura Scudder are the only brand we eat, and we eat a LOT of pb. We never refrigerate.

If you cannot find Smuckers, look for Laura Scudder. Same company.

I actually called Smuckers and asked what the difference is. Smuckers is roasted darker than Laura Scudder.

I know, I know - kind of anal to call about PB, but we were wondering as we wandered...

Merry Christmas!!
