I am at the planning stages of this transition and feel that I'm gravitating toward a minivan. I can't crawl around on my knees anymore. I'm wondering if the rolling stool from Harbor Freight would fit in at it's lowest height which is 15". Thoughts?

Sit in a chair against the wall, put a book on your head and push it back against the wall to measure from seat height to the book. This will give your sitting height. Add 15" and you have total height. Measure the van from floor to ceiling. It will either be tall enough or not. Not every mini van or person has the same measurements so there is no way to tell from behind a keyboard.

Thanks for the tip but I dont have a van yet! Lol

yea if the roll stool ya buy and you sitting fits your van then go for it LOL
nothing wrong with that....just make sure your van has a level easy rolling floor for that stool and I would think it would be a good addition for ya if needed by you.

If standing IS very important, get a van you can stand in vs. a roll stool to get ya around cause if this is something you are truly living in full time, the few basics of 'what you personally' require to live good are very very needed and the van you get is then very important.

Yeah, a stand up van is what I really need, but they're too pricey for me.

If you don't have the van yet, this will give you one of your criteria for picking one. When looking, bring a tape measure.

One question would be whether your layout and the things you load in your van would leave you room to roll anywhere, or whether you even needed a stool. For example, my twin bed runs front to back. When I sit on it I can reach everything in the van just by scooching one way or the other. If I had a stool in the remaining floor space I wouldn't be able to reach as many things, and it would be in the way when I get in and out of the van.

One thing tho keep looking at all vehicles cause you might run across the van of a lifetime with some great deal out there......hey for all of us that miracle great purchase can happen and we get the deal of the century on what we do need :) :) Negotiate the hell out of a van, might work, ya just never know the sellers situation!!

but I hear ya....like MrNoodly said....your floor plan becomes very important about rolling along.
one of those catchy/grabby long handled gadgets (I am sure there is a name for them LOL but I ain't got a clue) would be usable for reaching smallers things above ya.

it is good to chat out how you can get by with what ya have or might do down the road. all good advice can give ya some great ideas for your next moves.

I missed that you were talking about a MINIvan. In which case I say no, there isn't enough headroom to sit on something 15" high — unless you had a handicap conversion minivan.

To give you a better idea how much room there is (or isn't) in a minivan, here's a video of the Homes On Wheels Alliance minivan Bob had outfitted.

I have a low ceiling in my travel trailer over the area where I have my desk, as low as the ceilings in some mini vans. I found a small rolling, lightweight, adjustable height chair from Ikea. It does not roll unless you are sitting in it which is an advantage while underway on the road. Best of all because I have a bad back, it is a very comfortable chair. I am not a tall person so truthfully if you are a tall person you need to take that into account.

It is very affordable, right at $20.00. I got mine from the thrift store for $3.00. I just had to pull the shag carpet bits out of the rollers to get it to roll properly.

Hi, I had one of those harbor freight stools and found myself getting dumped so often...I gave it away. Any rolling stool with only 4 casters will dump you anytime you lean over to pick up anything.... the reachy/grabby thimg mentioned above will help as long as you don't lean too far of center.
Of course I'm old and stiff....if you are young and still limber you may not mind picking yourself up from tje floor.

Having to leave space or clear space for the rolling stool would be a hassle in a small van. Floor space is scarce.

Yes, I've come to that conclusion...

How in the world will a ceiling fan fit in a minivan? Maybe Bob didn't use the right word. All the ceiling fans I've seen have blades...
