Recommendations for great river road trips? I've enjoyed driving along the Rio Grande between Taos and SF and also the Mississippi driving from St.Paul to Davenport,Iowa. I bet the Hudson would be pretty cool also.

There are too many. I have been on and lived on many in the east coast. I have paddled the entire 220+ miles of the Delaware this spring and am writing the book now. I have done the Susky in PA and several others. It takes time to do the editing and such to put into words the thousands of images you see per second of travel. Take the Shenadoah for instance. I led three teenaged boys on a 5 day workshop. Day one taught them the flyrod and how to tie flyes, Day two water safety and camping. Day 3-5 was on the water experience. I made $900 and the boys took with them a life time of memories and skills.

The Lehigh, Hudson, New, etc. So many river systems so little time. I will do the entire ICW before I croak. But, I will do it in a self made dory skiff.

The rogue-umqua scenic byway will take you along two rivers in Oregon. One thing not mentioned in the guides/web pages is Umpqua Hot Springs.

Yeah, that's very nice and I've driven part of that, east of Roseburg to BLM camping by Canton Creek. Skagit and Columbia are awesome, too.

The Columbia River Gorge is one of my favorite scenic highways. Drive both the Washington and Oregon sides. There are nice free camping spots along the way. If you want to go farther you can follow the river into Washington - many cool things to visit but it's hot in the summer. http://traveloregon.com/trip-ideas/scenic-byways/the-historic-columbia-river-highway/ http://byways.org/explore/byways/2235

Thanks for the link TandK. I hope to be doing that route sometime this year. Next year I want to see the fall foliage in N.E. New Hampshire,Vermont,Mass and Maine are the only states I haven't been to.
