Request for RTR..gather mechanics

To Bob and all mechanically inclined,

RTR and on YouTube: I would love to hear about mechanical problems on the road and how you deal with them. Share your stories. 

Mechanics and technically inclined: Could you give us your tips for finding a used vehicle and some of the problems we might expect on the road and how to deal with them. 

To everyone else: Post your nightmare breakdowns on the road so our wizards can talk and share their incredible knowledge with the unknowing.

I'm not yet there, but I will be. I'm hoping we can all stay safe on the road.

Few weeks ago my van became totally un-driveable, would not accelerate over 20mph, and I deduced it was the catalytic converter plugged up. To test, I climbed underneath on the side of the road with a cordless reciprocating saw and cut holes in my exhaust until the van ran. Yep, diagnosis confirmed. I was a bit louder pulling into the job site that day, but I made it.
