just spent the night in a national forest area near Foks in a "recreational park" which after we pulled in around 10pm we noticed required a "discovery pass" and I'm pretty sure the place was meant only for daytime picnics. We set up tents anyway, it not being day nor did we have a pass. Was a fairly noisy night with traffic nearby, and we were up early and gone by 9am before a ranger made his rounds. no idea what the penalty for illegal camping or not having a discovery pass might be... but only wanted to get through the night and on to the ocean today. Finding a road you could disperse camp on wasn't working.... so you take your chances.

Hey, you may want to check out Al Christensen's blog Rolling Steel Tent if you are going to follow the coastline down and sample beaches and such.

He stays at pay campgrounds some if on the ocean or else in marina parking areas (which you pay to stay in but have showers, etc.). But, you can begin reading at about the post at this link and then go back to ealier and earlier ones. I think he must have at least a dozen on ocean view camping if memory serves me.

In the Forks area, I think they turn you over to the vampires.   :D

The fine is $99.00. If you're going to be in Washington state for awhile buying a Discovery Pass is worthwhile. It's only $35.00 for a whole year and there are a lot of very nice places where you can camp for free if you have the pass.
Discovery Pass - http://discoverpass.wa.gov/faq.aspx

The official website doesn't make it easy to find the campsites. This site is much better - https://www.campendium.com/washington  Check Dept. Fish & Wildlife and Dept. Natural Resources to eliminate all of the other campgrounds.

here in southern kalifornia the Forest Service was issuing those passes to anyone who wanted to park on FS land. if you were just driving through you were fine, but if you stopped for any reason for any amount of time even to take a picture you needed the pass. some one took them to court and won, the courts said they couldn't charge for parking. well the FS ignored that ruling and kept issuing the passes and giving tickets for not having them. low and behold they were taken to court again and lost again. this time they were told to cease and desist, with the passes. I am not sure what is going on at this moment because I haven't heard anything lately. http://www.latimes.com/opinion/opin...t-free-hike-pay-bathrooms-20140509-story.html . highdesertranger
