Hi Catina,

I don't think you answered questions about height of passengers. That will help people help you. You might even want to add this to your original post.

The first RV I looked at was a Falcon Class B that had a small dinette in the back, not sure if it had seat belts. They can often be added. I'm considering adding them to the sofa of my Airstream B190. The Falcon was only $4000, but got beat out by a cash buyer. The B190 was $6500, which is about half what they usually go for. I'm in SoCal also, so prices can be 2-3x higher.

Like you, I don't have a ton of building experience and with mobility issues, I couldn't do much. The trade off is not being very stealth. Wasn't clear how important that was to you.

Assuming you might want something much more recent (mine's a 1990). I hope to come in around $10k as well after new fuel pump, solar, and maybe floors. I also want to install an oven, which was one of my reasons for wanting a B190, but couldn't pass up a great price an hour away.

I didn't see a ton of conversion vans here in our price range, but they do come up. I would think one with a rear bench seat/bed with seatbelt would be a great option, as others have said. I've also seen some semi-stealth Class Bs (Roadtrek and Pleasureway) with such rear beds. They would also have insulation, ventilation, and standing room. Possible downside is losing interior room, due to kitchen and bath. Also, financing and insurance can be difficult, since market price is above Bluebook.

Still, as I experienced, deals come up, even here. Having cash on hand helps you grab one. I know you said passenger or cargo, not class B, but just using my example for good prices in our typically higher priced area. I've seen the best deals in San Diego, for some reason. I wish you luck!

Great points, thank you!  There might be hope, I did see a Promaster 2014 cargo van high roof that has a "double seat" in front next to the driver's seat.  At about $23K it is above my price range to buy outright... but it may be tempting to go the route of financing.  This one happens to have a window in the sliding door and windows in the back doors.  hmmmm.....

I think as a new poster I'm not allowed to include links, but I will try to include a picture.

Passenger van.... way too many windows that are hard to cool and heat. (you can't run the engine all the time)

Cargo van... easy to insulate well and build any way you wish.

I went with a 12 seat passenger wagon because I wanted the windows (limo tinted) and with the XLT version it comes fully loaded with all the bells and whistles. Yes it was a little more work to remove the 10 excess seats/rails and paneling, but selling those seats/rails paid for a lot of my conversion materials. I really enjoy being able to observe whats around me during the day and still be private. Now night time is a different beast, that's when I put up my insulated window covers, watch a movie, have a nightcap, then sleep soundly.

Update: A few days ago I couldn't stand it and purchased a 2007 Dodge Caravan. I figure I will use this for a year or so to get some experience before making the full-on commitment to a big cargo van-house. I will go on my first little 7/8 day trip the first week of April! Thank you for everyone for your advice and input. I predict I will end up doing... BOTH! First the 'lil passenger van, then hopefully in a few years a new, bare, hightop cargo van!

Congratulations! I wavered between a class B and C, but it felt great when I found a B in my budget. There is something to be said for getting started. Safe travels!

Dodge makes great long lasting vans. All Dodge engines sound the best imo.

Drive Safe!
