Hey everybody

I've been lookin' at alot of rigs over the past year and it's been tough making a choice, considering my budget, what to pick for my "mansion" of sorts ....I have finally found my "diamond in the rough". It's a '89 chevy refrigerated box van that was used for haulin' ice cream. It had not been used in awhile as the the ice cream shop had been downsized and not hauling alot of product anymore. They had been trying to sell it for over a year. I work nearby so I see it everyday. They originally wanted $2200.00 for it, which was too much in my opinion so I waited to "pull the trigger" on the deal until they eventually dropped the price to $1000.00. The main reason I wanted it was it could have so so many possibilities. It's kinda ugly on the outside, as you'll see in the pics. The engine, exhaust system, fuel pump had recently been replaced about 10,000 miles ago, so i figure thats a pretty good start for a build on my income. I will update my progress on the "walrus" at each step / process. ...................................Randy

Good deal -- looking forward to the pics!

I've thought about a refrigerated van too... the insulation would be all done and if there was a thermostat, the refrigeration could be used as AC. Some solar panels on top, and voila... of course, I know nothing about such things, so I'm sure it's not that easy.

Hi Blueberry
I have been trying to figure out how to add pics from my computer files but cant figure it out with this site. Hi Randy!

I can help with the picture thing

Plus, WELCOME! and YAY for your Walrus and new home!!!

Anyways, for pictures, there are 2 ways to do it:

If you have a URL to the picture (i.e. it's already on the web somewhere.

If you have the picture on your computer and you want to send it to the forum.

The first: if you look just above where you type, there should be all sorts of little buttons and stuff. There will be 2 rows of them, the second row, the 7th one over, is the one that lets you insert pictures. It's a little picture with a line under it, it looks like this: .

If you click that, it will ask you for a URL, just paste that in, and you are good to go.

The second way, is below where you type in text, it will say "Manage Attachments". If you click on that, it will bring up a dialog and you point it at the image file, and then say go. Wala! it will attach the pictures to the post!

If you have trouble, let me know!

With Love,
Tara

Coo-Coo -ca-choo, Mr Robinson. "I" am the eggman.... sorry, couldnt resist!
Welcome! For me , using a phone for most of my forums, it was easier to load pics to Photobucket or other off site storage and then paste in an img code or url.

Hi Randy,

I'm guessing maybe you have Javascript turned off on your browser? You will need to go into preferences and turn javascript on. Also make sure you are using a relatively newer browser, say Firefox (the latest version is 17 something), or Google Chrome (latest version is 23 something), Safari (latest version is 6 something) and Internet Explorer (latest version is 10 something).

it should highlight red when you put your mouse on it, and then clicking on it should open a 'file upload' window.

With Love,
Tara

Park that in a mall or commercial parking lot and no one will even think twice that you live in it. Epic find!

My only concern would be the condensation that will accumulate on the ceiling, the venting needed prior to trying to sleep in the big beauty and the entrance / exit that's not connected to the cab.

Best of luck with the pictures and please post more as the conversion progresses!

Thanks for all the kudos!......

I know it's a bit rough, but i actually bought it for chassis, drivetrain as a good foundation to start with. I am going to get rid of the refrigerated box and build my own in its place, custom to my needs and alot lighter and versatile. I am considering adding a light weight flat bed first, then making a removable box"home", like how a camper would be portable, when not in use.kinda like havin' a portable cabin that you could off-load for camping, use the van/flatbed as a truck/transportation, then reload your home when you you to move, say like if your boondockin',extended stays and such. I would also have the stealth ability built in as it would stay mounted to the flat bed and look like a "boxvan" normally. Anyways thats the "plan" i have come up with. Will see how it goes!

                                                                                          Randy
