Hi family,
I have noticed that when I see someone post who I don't know and I go to their profile to see who they are, where they live etc. Nada.
I do understand that some people feel they need to protect their privacy and I am not asking to violate your comfort level but what if we all just added a little info about who we are where we live.....and whatever you might feel you can add and still feel safe.

I belong to several forums that won't let you post without a profile and there has never been a privacy problem that i have heard about....so I don't think the privacy thing should get in the way of us knowing what part of the country you are from, maybe your general age and gender....and maybe something name-like that we can call you other than 'bluemoonmonkeyfistxfmb2'..
Whatcha think?
Bri

I too wonder as to where people are. I'm Ed living in Alabama. Anyone close PM me and we will meet face to face. Ed
It would be nice to see who your chatting with

Thanks Bri. Hi, I'm Diane from Ohio.
With the wierd you hear on the media non-stop, a lot of people are paranoid. I do go to the profiles to see where and who and love it when I can put a face to a 'handle'. This summer a few us in the tri state Oh area are trying for a get together to test new rigs and meeting of the minds, so some of us have communicated thru IM and private email. I even 'met' mountaintramp online and ordered a wonderful necklace from him.
www.dragonflyinthesky.com
I've yet to move into the digital camera age and haven't learned to scan things to the computer yet. Would like to put up a pic of myself. Is there a way to do that using the built in camera on my netbook? I couldn't see any way to do that.

imagine: 62 yr old female, short salt n pepper hair, an un-happy looking mouth due to lines at the corners that slant downward, dark eyes that had a kid singing "geepers creepers...where'd ya get those peepers" to me in first grade.
Hi all, Thanks for the responses. I see that you folks do have enough info on your profiles to feel a connection with a human being! I do appreciate it.
Butterfly: Maybe someone will jump in and tell you how to do that pic thing with your pc camera. I don't know myself...I have had a digicam for quite a few years...they are so cheap these days for a pretty good one...Can you have someone who has one take a photo of you and then email it to you? then you could upload it to your profile.
Hugs to all,
Bri

for me, it's not only knowing a little bit about the person (f'rinstance, knowing the part of the country you are from helps when you mention the weather or something) but i also have a hard time keeping track of folks when screen names are similar or really nondescript. when you get 3 or 4 bob's, or a couple people go simply by "D", i have a harder time feeling connected. but i'm old and not as sharp as i used to be, so there ya go :)

this happens to me on my blog alot, and sometimes in private emails. any little identifying thing helps me!

Butterfly, I went to your profile to send an email re posting a picture- but alas, private. I got very frustrated with my $300 "smartphone/ pocket computer" because of this. One way around it is to sign up for one of the remote photo storage sites like photobucket, snapfish, and I think kodak has one. You 1) take picture 2) upload to remote site 3) get your pictures URL info from the site 4) insert the URL into the spot where it asks for your picture information, file or URL. I use photobucket because it was a free app on my iPhone, but it doesn't work for everything, I can't post pics to the yahoo groups like vandwellers. Hope that helps.

I can't figure out why people will not just fill out a little info. Even if they just say their state or region, hobbies, and maybe age or a picture. I can understand not giving your address or even your county if you are worried about weirdos. One thing I do know is that if I tell you I like kayaking, you can't steal my identity.
butterfly- When I snap a picture with my web cam it automatically stores in my pictures folder. To add the picture you just go into your profile, select add picture, and hit the browse button. When the window pops up search through you folder until you find the picture you want and select it. If yours is like mine, it should be rather easy. Hopefully this helps. If it does not then it is probably because it is 12:30am and i am tired. Good luck.

I don't know why my profile pic does not show up next to my posts. Will try to post more general info at profile. Also don't know why pic on profile "elongated" when posting. Be glad for advice. jb

Ok. I needed to change the font size. How can I make 12 pt. the default?

sorry wrong terminology go to your control panel within Cheaprvliving, com, go down to profile picture, select upload picture from computer, and then select a picture from your pictures folder. sorry to all for hijacking the thread for a minute. just trying to help out.
There are so many reasons not to give out personal data that I could fill this forum. Just the number of computers I get for repair that have been hacked, hijacked, etc. and the owners bank, private and personal info stolen would shock you. Most of it is because of people putting too much info and photos on online "profiles", using all the same passwords/user names and linking accounts from one website to another.
Diane is exactly right. The bad stuff that happens - happens mostly to women and what we 'hear' about is only a small percentage of the actual truth.
If someone wants to hunt you down or target you for whatever ill intentions, they'll find a way. But you don't need put so much info out there that you make yourself an easy target for the hackers, stalkers, nut jobs, thieves or obsessives.
My personal peeve - people who post lots of pictures of their little kids, their vehicles, their house, details about where/when they work, where their kids go to school.....and don't even think twice about attracting pedophiles.

Your name, address, SSN, DOB, license #, vehicle tags and phone number are a lot easier to get than most honest people realize.
What can't be found easily and quickly on the internet, can be found in public libraries, in Census books, Reverse Street/Phone Directories, Town Halls, etc.
One small piece of information can be cross referenced to fill in the rest of the blanks.

Personal safety is more important than some strangers idle curiosity over your a/s/l.
Especially if you're a chick.

I don't doubt you at all 4x4, but in fact your profile is more of what I would like to see.

I have an idea of where you are from, what you do and interests you have and that you have no first name....well "4x4"....if that is how I should know you....That is fine with me.....

Sure as heck isn't revealing and we know you are a person.

Just a baseline connection....it is a human thing....

Bri

Les H and dlivesgreen...I appreciate your efforts to enlighten me on how to get a photo on my profile. I get the general gist of what you're saying but I go to my pic files, look at the screen and "Ummmm???? ...maybe I click this? will it work if I click that?.....nope.

What happened was the computer took complete offense w/ my efforts and locked up the screen... I clicked and the computer said "beep" Not a good thing.

I shut down the computer then restarted it later to correct the frozen screen issue. Decided I'd best give up on the profile pic for now.
One link and five minutes reveals a lot about a person, just using the net. Links to businesses and organizations reveal a lot of info. Domain information is readily available, and provides contact information, should you own your own domain name. Even found name, two addresses and phone number for one of your friends. All freely published on the net. You've got to be careful what you publish. You even advertised, if I remember correctly, where you're going to be at a given time.

Diane

You're worse than Brian. Be careful what you guys post, please. The information is available to anyone who passes through here, not just regulars whom you may grow to trust.

Don't forget what a simple computer program can do - the spam above was placed there by computer, picking up on the keyword 'profiles'. Computers can also strip and collelate info from websites and forums as well.

Thanks, I will be more careful. I consider myself fortunate to have another forum member to look out for me. This truly is a good little tribe.

diane
