When I first started out in the camping world, we (my ex and I) started off with a pop up. While it was great southern east coast, we quickly move into a pull behind RV. After our divorce, I gave up the BIG RV and have instead moved into primative car camping (ie using a tent and or sleeping in the back of the car, Honda Fit). I always keep a tent with me incase I can pitch it, it's great for storage etc. I too am planning to make it to RTR this year, and while I'm begining the transition to a VAN, I most likely will not have one for a few more years. I wanna buy something more dependable and if I wait another few years I'll be able to get something nice. Currently I can only part time camp and must maintain a home base anyway. So the tent and Honda Fit RV works out well. While I have no idea about tents in the dessert, I have read it's not where you want to sleep. I own a snugpak tent, and while if forced to sleep in a tent when it's chilly I'd choose it, I'm gonna bring a cheap pop up tent for storage at the RTR. My car will be much warmer and I don't have to worry about the winds while I'm snoozing.

I have considered getting a truck and pulling an A frame, or even the tear drops. But I'd not go back to a pop up unless the deal was just so darn amazing. I wanna have the flexibility of dessert, rest stops, bear country etc. Good luck and hope to see you there.

I'm not a fan of popups of any kind. They are great for part-timers who just take trips, I don't recommended for full-timers. I had a friend who started out in a Northstar pop-up, was in it for year and sold it for a hard-sided slide-in camper.

The wind and the cold in the desert is the main problem.

There is a web site called PopUpPortal.  While it's main focus is on Pop up campers, like this site it has threads that deal with many issues related to a mobile lifestyle.

I have a 1997 Viking Anniversary Edition pop up trailer. I bought it because extended it has lots of floor space and can sleep six people or more.   I like pop up trailers because they have low wind resistance while towing. I've never set up in high winds or desert as I'm more of a lakes and woods type, however my goal is to return to Texas and points west and hopefully a RTR.

This is my second Pop up trailer.  I have had it for 4ys and my situation for using it has changed.   I am not able to pull out the bed slides by myself so it is for sale or trade.

I'm in S.E. AL near FT. Rucker AL and will post it here.  I need a small camper trailer of some sort that my Ranger 4x4/V6 will tow easily.  Or a lite weight slide in camper.  Or a cargo trailer.
