I have a 1991 G10 Chevy Van.

I've been looking around for a while for a roof rack and they are all pretty expensive. This is to hold some solar panels. Does anyone have any plans or pictures of a rack that you can build yourself cheap?

Look at standard contractors pipe racks for vans. Even harbor freight has a cheap set . You will most likely have to cut the legs that attach to the gutters and lengthen them to clear your hightop. You can bolt a piece of steel in or go all out and have it welded in.

Thanks.

I've searched the harbor freight website for "Van Pipe Rack" and "Van Rack" and I can't come up with anything. Could you search their site and come up with a link for me?

YES

I used these for many years whitewater kayaking. As long as your van has rain gutters (I don't know about Chevy, only Ford) then you clamp these directly to the rain gutters. You use the wooden board of your choice to bolt to the tower.

Far cheaper than the Yakima/Thule racks I've grown accustomed to but they darned sure worked.

The last one I made like this had seasoned 2x4" spanning the towers with scrap shag carpeting stapled to it to protect the kayak.

Yep... styling.

http://www.altrec.com/nrs/quik-n-easy-rack-brackets-set-of-4
