We are about three weeks into our first park hosting job at Tyler State Park in East Texas and it has been a learning experience. Most everyone here has been super nice and park hosting is certainly a good way to obtain a free site with all hookups. However, we learned that you are bit more tethered than we would like to be. So, we are planning to move on in the next few weeks and want to make our way into the area north of Taos, New Mexico to do some gold panning and prospecting using our metal detector. If anyone has any experience or recommendations for cheap or free places to park (boondocking or otherwise) in that area, we would appreciate the input. Also, we are looking for ok places for overnight stops between here and there. Again, if you know of anything, sing out.

I have never been to that area of new mexico so have no ideas, but good luck on the prospecting. let us know you do and pics of any big nuggets. highdesertranger

leaf - are you a fan of FIREFLY series? your handle is a quote from that series.

I don't have any suggestions for the Taos area either but won't you be on federal land? There should be good boondocking opportunities so try stopping at the forest visitor center for some ideas.

When we travel through Texas we usually take the back roads and stay at the numerous picnic table rest areas. Many of the small towns in Texas have free city parks. We stayed in some of them and they're pretty nice. Here's a good site with links to the parks - http://freecampsites.net/attribute/states/tx/

Have a good trip!

Hey off road. I am a HUGE fan of the Firefly series (...watch me soar!) and did, indeed, adopt my handle from Wash's quote in his final scene. I still can't believe they cancelled that series after only one season. Go figure!

tonyandkaren,
Thanks for the link on free campsites. I know it will come in handy. We are leaving this weekend and can't wait to set out for parts unknown.
