On 4x4s I've had in the past it made a difference in MPGs over the long term. Plus, it was one less set of U joints that needed replacing as often.

I used to keep mine wrapped behind the seat.

OK...I've never heard that tip before...but it does make sense!

Great!! I actually learned something today.....from YOU GUYS no less!!! :p

All my 4x4s had locking hubs and I assumed that when they were free and the transfer case was in 2wd the front drive shaft didn't turn. But I could be wrong.
Bob

you are right bob. with hubs unlocked, transfer in 2 wheel drive the front driveshaft does not turn. I would not own a 4x4 without manual locking front hubs. all that automatic or push button stuff is just a problem waiting to happen and eventually it does happen. highdesertranger

I love the old Airstreams too. TI hope you'll finish it and share the finished project!

Airstreams are great could not afford one here in CALI. Just remember to invest wisely tow safe and keep the faith.

Cool. Just going by what I was told years ago and had done without a second thought I guess.
I must have been delusional about any advantages :s :D

I have owned several GM trucks with full auto, dash selected, 4x4 since 1999. Hundreds of thousands of miles, absolutely ZERO issues. Like a lot of modern conveniences, they certainly have the potential for being problematic, but in my case, they have performed flawlessly. Oddly enough, I have ended up with several extremely loaded, and thoroughly used, full sized GM trucks in the last fifteen years that performed with zero issues when it comes to all the needless toys onboard.

well west river I can't argue about your experience but I am with the school of thought that if it's not there it can't break. highdesertranger

While you might not be parking your airstream in neighbourhood streets, you can park it in most parking lots. I love the look of an airstream. They are keepers. And any RV park will let you in with one if you keep it in good condition.
