It's been my experience that a V6 in a Modern large Vehicle actually uses more fuel than the V8. My two Sport Tracs get 13 and 14 respectively, with the one with the V8 getting the 14. When you need the extra oomph to climb a hill or haul a load, that V6 is working harder and drinking faster.
My ecoboost F150 friends tell me that when towing and climbing hills, they get about what I get with my 4.6 V8. But then those are turbocharged.
Dodge also learned this with the original Durango. There were some early 3.9L V6 units that returned horrible fuel economy vs the 5.2 (318) V8 so it was dropped very early in the run.
