Hi all

I am a van (small motorhome actually) dweller full time from a land down under, thought it would be good to talk the friends across the water abouit the life we all share.

I have travelled this way for a number of years but only last year became full time on the road, with no 'static' home after my partner passed last year and the house went to his adult kids.

I am not quite old enough to retire but have spent this year studying and have determined to only work in ethically sound roles in fiture regardless of $$, although I have to earn enough to buy the bones for my navigator 1st class Clancy and 2IC Connor who are both Whippets.

Nice to meet you all, I am sure I willpick up some good stuff from here.

Annie

Hi Annie,

Great to see you here, and yes, you will learn lots. It is invaluable, and many of the members are so knowledgable. Wish I had found this site before I bought my van.

Whereabouts 'downunder'? Melbourne here.

I am a newbie van dweller when I am in the US, where I travel regularly. Here at home it is strictly bricks and mortar. But somehow, the road is calling. Wish I could get rid of this place, and all that's in it. It would mean losing my pension, as selling the house would throw me over the assett limit.

A conundrum!

Meanwhile I will be travelling up to the centre, Uluru, etc, in May, and plan to have a mattress in my Outback.

Lifey

Thanks for replies!

Lifemagician, at present I have a free site with power just out of Bendigo, there is quite a lot of work to do in return and not much chance for time off and as my studies are getting to the 'pointy end' ie getting tougher each study unit I may go back to free camping with maybe the odd night in a caravan park every now and then just until the course ends in June.

Have you been up to Uluru before?

Hi Pikachu 711, thanks for your welcome too!

annie

Welcome from New Mexico Annie. Really cool to have Ozzies here with us...you have a long and imaginative history of roadliving down there from what i read and hear. Nice to have you share that with us and to share ours with you.

As you have probably gathered by now, Bob Wells, the owner of this forum and website has begun and shepherds a gathering called the Rubbertamp Rondy here in a little spot of desert called Quartzsite, Arizona and many of us are here enjoying the comradery and energy of fellowship with workshops and help for each other with projects, etc. Two weeks or so long, it is the highlight of the year for many.

The town of Quartzsite used to be nothing much of a town except for a yearly gem and mineral show with folks tailgating and selling and trading each other various mineral related stuff...kind of an "underground economy" that is surounded by thousands of acres of government managed public land that folks would camp on.

It has turned into a interesting circus of commercialism and capitalism with huge lots of high end motorhomes and fifth wheel trailers for sale and every kind of cheap Chinese made crap you can imagine with the government charging people to camp in many of the areas that used to be free. It has lost it's shine for those of us who came here before the change but many folks love it and come back to spend the winter and willingly pay to camp in the (LTVA) long term visitor areas....

It works well for us though since we camp on land that is free to use for 14 days at a time. And there is a large tent show where several contract companies that hire for camp hosts in the public land campgrounds...which is how many of ouyr folks spend their summers....

Bri
