LOL Ruff, I'm sure there are games out there as I'm finding video of it on Youtube. Then there is "Figure 8 Race Track" which can be a demolition derby too.
That concept has been around along time. They used to call it arm chair traveling. Travel videos are still common. I myself have used Google Earth to do a walking tour of streets in various villages in Europe. I have done that in person before. The act of driving is not my passion, the act of absorbing the atmosphere, culture and the physical surroundings is not best done at high speeds in a vehicle.

I guess it's a mater of "to each his/her own".
I would imagine a person could travel virtually with a simulator at whatever speed they are comfortable with and drive part of the time and get out and do a walking tour in places that interest them as you suggest . If they wanted to travel in areas they never could reach before then the virtual simulation is one possible solution. Like if I want to drive around in Rome, Berlin, London, Tokyo, or where ever Google Earth would allow for me to travel.
The sketch I rendered of clothes lines and bed sheets to mock up a virtual Rig could be used by those with grand kids to entertain, students wishing to view areas they are interested in, and those with a desire to pre-travel a route
they want to plan for a future date so when they do leave they can travel more efficiently. Or just to "pretend" they are living out of a Rig. A person's only limit is their imagination.
I picked up my Logitech Wingman Formula GP simulator years ago in a yard sale for $8 dollars. (was complete with software too) The owner's kid wanted a more advanced one for racing.
