As I run toward vehicle living I am leaving behind 20+ years of experience as a veterinary technician and towing with me 6 cats and one deer mouse (don't ask I've had her for almost 5 years) This made me realize that I need to bulk up their first aid kit. While a lot of items for human and animal first aid are very similar there are some things that you just can't give them. I spent this morning filling my kit to the brim . . .<br><br>Here's what's in my first aid kit contains:<br><br>1 1000ml bag of Lactated Ringers<br>2 250ml bags of NaCl (saline)<br>2 500ml bags of NaCl (saline)<br>1 bottle of eye flush<br>4 standard IV lines<br>2 microdrip IV lines<br>3 22g x 1" IV catheters<br>3 30 x 1" IV catheters<br>3 24 x 3/4" IV catheters<br>Assorted syringes from 1ml - 60ml<br>Assorted needles from 16g - 25g<br>1 Nye tourniquet<br>2 unconstituted bottles of Amoxi drops<br>1 10ml bottle of Metacam (pet safe pain reliever)<br>1 small bottle of baby aspirin (pets <b>CAN NOT</b> have Ibuprofen or Tylenol)<br>2 tubes Neosporin<br>2 tubes A & D ointment<br>1 tube of BNP eye ointment (like neosporin for the eyes)<br>1 tube of NPD eye ointment (same as above with a steroid in it)<br>1 container silver sulfadiazine cream<br>1 box of non-sterile heavy duty rubber gloves<br>1 pr. heavy leather gloves (if the animal is painful you don't want to get bitten)<br>1 box of alcohol wipes<br>5 rolls Vetwrap<br>3" x 3" gauze pads<br>2" x 2" gauze pads<br>5 rolls 1" white tape<br>5 rolls 2" white tape<br>1 box large Talfa pads (they don't stick to wounds)<br>1 small box of tongue depressors<br>1 small box Talfa Pads<br>1 tube styptic pencils<br>2 8 french rubber catheters (good for tube feeding or unblocking a cat with urinary issues - I have 4 males cats and one already has a crystal problem I've never had to unblock him but I know it's a possibility)<br>6 FVRCP vaccines (they are all due in Jan for their annual vaccines)<br>Bandage scissors<br>Tweezers<br>Stethoscope<br>Rectal thermometer (cats and dogs run at temps of 101 - 102.5)<br><br>I have other items but they are aimed at human first aid.<br>All of this should effectively handle ANY emergency my cats should have (and some people if it came down to it) My kit is stored in a large camera bag<br><br>Keep your pets safe.
