Well, got rid of the old camper and got a new old camper. It's a 9 1/2' Vanguard from the 70's. Cost $750 and sold the fridge for $130, so $620. I thought it would be a super heavy pig, but it seems to ride the same as my previous 8' Caveman. Big difference, aside from the fiberglass roof, is.. ROOM! Both legroom and storage are much more than the previous camper. Just that 1 1/2' of length actually gives me more storage than I need.
The one thing I'll have to look into, if I can't find a reasonably priced step van, is insulation for the winter. The most important will be the roof and, barring ripping it off and adding foam paneling, my best bet would be to add a sub-ceiling composed of 1/2" square lathing with Reflectix (or this 1/8" cork underlay material I've found with an insane R rating of around 3) with some paneling or Coroplast to hide it.
One thing I've found, and this is also dependent upon location (desert vs. northern crap wet weather), is that more room helps to keep one from going stir-crazy. Of course, it's a balancing act with fuel economy vs. space, but sometimes it's worth taking the 'hit'. Besides, I'm just plain tired of having little floor space and things inaccessibly stored.
Notice the solar fan setup that migrated from my other unit. Made a wooden blocking/mounting piece fot the fan and I'll paint it later. Might even add a second fan to the other roof vent.. or not. ..Willy. edit.. Almost forgot, notice where my (covered with white hurricane tape) wires from my solar panels come in via a hole in the side of the roof vent. The panels are actually GLUED to the roof, so there aren't any holes to leak!

Thanks for the good photos Willy...Very sweet old vintage set-up. I like it a lot...enjoy.
Bri

My Mom (who I'm visiting) absolutely LOVES the retro-teal decor. Hope this translates into hot hippy chicks wanting to test out the overhead bed with (dirty) ol' Willy.

Well, you never know...good luck and be careful.... You may just catch one.

Bri
Congrats on a great deal!
Looks like the ol' girl's in great shape!

Congrats on the bigger unit: the reason we switched from a camper van to a TC. One fan should be sufficient if you locate the vent for incoming on the other side of where you sit or sleep. Good air circulcation works wonders.

OMG what a bargain. please share how your search results in such a bargain?
