Well, got rid of the old camper and got a new old camper. It's a 9 1/2' Vanguard from the 70's. Cost $750 and sold the fridge for $130, so $620. I thought it would be a super heavy pig, but it seems to ride the same as my previous 8' Caveman. Big difference, aside from the fiberglass roof, is.. ROOM! Both legroom and storage are much more than the previous camper. Just that 1 1/2' of length actually gives me more storage than I need.
The one thing I'll have to look into, if I can't find a reasonably priced step van, is insulation for the winter. The most important will be the roof and, barring ripping it off and adding foam paneling, my best bet would be to add a sub-ceiling composed of 1/2" square lathing with Reflectix (or this 1/8" cork underlay material I've found with an insane R rating of around 3) with some paneling or Coroplast to hide it.
One thing I've found, and this is also dependent upon location (desert vs. northern crap wet weather), is that more room helps to keep one from going stir-crazy. Of course, it's a balancing act with fuel economy vs. space, but sometimes it's worth taking the 'hit'. Besides, I'm just plain tired of having little floor space and things inaccessibly stored.
Notice the solar fan setup that migrated from my other unit. Made a wooden blocking/mounting piece fot the fan and I'll paint it later. Might even add a second fan to the other roof vent.. or not. ..Willy. edit.. Almost forgot, notice where my (covered with white hurricane tape) wires from my solar panels come in via a hole in the side of the roof vent. The panels are actually GLUED to the roof, so there aren't any holes to leak!
