I have decided that in the spring or early summer I should have had enough time to buy and build a van to go traveling. I am on SSDI and have nothing holding me here, so it is time to leave. But first I have to get a van. Found several but think as I have read that spring is not a good time to buy a vehicle. Thinking of getting a conversion van and thought it might be cheaper to get that in the fall when people are done using them anymore. The question I have to figure out yet as I can't afford an RV is how to insure the van when I put in a fridge, bed and other contents in the back. If someone could point me to a place to read, I would greatly appreciate it. One more year of sticks and bricks

Welcome to the forum... you might want to buy a van, insure it the same day and then begin working on it.

Bob has done videos about insurance for nomads.  Hope this link works.

Lots of people think I'm crazy- but that was way before I started thinking about going full time on the road.  Since they already think we are crazy, why not just
live our lives the way we want?

Good luck, I have about 10 months before I get to full time. :)

I learned long ago not to give a ratshit what anyone thinks of me. (shrug)

When I need their permission, I'll be sure and ask for it.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite quotes............

You should have plenty of time to shop for, and find, the right vehicle. Buying a vehicle without comprehensive insurance has replacement risk. Uninsured coverage is one way to address that. My vehicle is old enough that it isn’t worth even that.

Self insuring with savings is the best way to go. The resource limit on ssdi is a problem. If they indexed it to inflation it would now be 10k, not two.

Communities often have emergency funds, I’ve used one for tires. I won’t need to for this next set.

I just got my Chinook last week. I’m getting a ton of work done on it and fixing it up with upgrades etc over the upcoming months. In California you don’t need to register a vehicle for 30days after purchase, but if you drive it you need insurance. RV insurance is cheap. I use Geiko and get the roadside assistance too. My driving record is clean so my insurance is low. But I’m gonna put extra insurance on the chinook because it’s worth way more than book value. Right now it’s in my driveway waiting to be hooked up for adventure! Got the breaks done a few days ago. Next up suspension!
