Yes the ideal would be an actual legally operating campground, coupled with a mail forwarding / letterbox service at a different address.

Holy mackerel..I am getting ready to buy my small bit of FREEDOM. Still deciding between a chevy cargo van and a Toyota Winnebago Rv..
So bbn many things to consider..how much to spend on my small budget. Buy the best I can afford and do solar later ?? Please advise..

Don't be nervous. Keep it simply. You need to do your own research. In my opinion, best to have mail service where you already have residency. But, I have concluded A USPS box is best for me, as now you can go online to USPS site and put in change of address anytime you want and there is no extra charge for first class mail forwarding. With two of the.major forwarding services used by nomads closing down this month, seems like USPS will last longer than little companies.

Just went through this with my mail forwarding service ESCAPEES. They are based out of Texas so all mail goes to Texas first and then gets sent to you. Heard they have an office in South Dakota too.

Separately you need to have a DOMICILE address. That is the affiliated RV Park. That is required to get a driver license. Mine is in Florida associated with ESCAPEES and physically in Bushnell, Florida.

This all became a rather more significant issue given voting laws. You can’t get an absentee ballot if you don’t have a physical address. But it was proven that RV parks are physical address, regardless of the fleeting intermittent nature of physical residency. At least in Florida that’s true. And they are an aggressive controversial voting process state. SD may be different.

My county SUMTER county in Florida is setting up online tracking of your absentee ballot. So you will know you got it and they received your vote when you mail it back. Pretty damned advanced for any where.

Hello fellow No-mads,

RE:
"My Dakota Address"
debacle..
No-mad, just hurt/confused!

Jumped through all the bureaucratic hoops last year in SD to gain domicle,
driver's license, vehicle registration, etc.
(Circa September 2017)

Net result: Have SD
(Real ID) driver's license with PMB as legitimate
address.
HOWEVER, with Mail forwarder (Terri) no longer operating.. I must inform DMV and email them my "new" address (no need to visit DMV in SD, per their web site..but merely email the new address to them)
So far So good; But being in Arizona presently..what's my "new" address ? (Asking rhetorically).
Escapees RV claims a presence in "Great Places/Great Faces" SD;
So lets assume that from visiting their website, they can furnish me a "domicile" address which in turn I can email to SD DMV and "Get on with my life?"

OR..
How would I fare by maintaining my DL, and moseying along. (All significant correspondents I have are reachable online and all is well for now). What happens "down the road" though..One entity decides not to play nice, and a world of hurt ensues??
Do not need mail forwarding, per se, except rarely.
Doesn't seem cost effective to pay someone $100.00 +
dollars a year to furnish a domicile. (Then there's the affidavit angle) Seems one could furnish this independently of a "mail forwarder".
This service May not be necessary?
Paying some $500.00 for a DL that needs to be renewed in 5 years seems a bit absurd!
What say you?
Pay to play??

There seems to be so many variables based on each individuals situation that without knowing completely your situation it is hard to render an oponion. I believe Escapees recomends a few agencies and advisors that might be able to help. Health care, taxes, insurance and even air travel are all envolved and different from state to state. If you think $500 will make everything work for you for the next five years with little or no hassels, allow you to use air travel if necessary, and stay out of trouble that sounds pretty good to me. I've spent much more than that just traveling to get my mail as I live remotely in a couple different areas different times of the year.

Carny, what about insurance?

Dakota Post said in an email sent to me that they anticipate getting some of the MDA people and they are set up to make the change streamlined and easy.  You might just give them a call.  I think Karen is the person who you'd talk to.  At any rate, it might be worth a call to find out how they intend to help and if it suits you, try it out and if not, then something else.  And then State Farm in Sioux Falls is pretty good.

When I leave FL as a home base, I'll move back to SD.  The insurance rates are so low there.

Hope you are able to sort it out okay!!!

If you want to go along **for a while** with a domicile address that no longer works, go for it.

At some point you may be up for a fine for not keeping SD DMV updated.

Solve that problem next time you're in SD, ideally finding a non-commercial solution.

But my god, you think that's not worth $100 a year?

Or of course change to another state, but that will cost more.
