Was looking online for the mist cooling systems that Vegas casinos and other hot location hotels have at their entrance. The advertisement is the cooling of the air by 20 plus degrees if used in ideal low humidity conditions. Am sure it would be less effective in high humidity, but combined with an efficient fan, all outside, it might be nice.

Then looked at insect control with mist systems. You can repel a lot of bugs with a mist system. Just minimal reading that some use a pyrmithrin chemical additive Not sure that's safe but bet you could add some other safer organic chemical to repel Mosquitos with a mist generator.

Has anyone tried this?

Here is the cooling system and the bug repellent system I was thinking about. Maybe someone has a seen a better system? would this not make sense to control bugs, and cool down?

Used in South GA. David installed it. Wasn't ours. Worked just fine. Commercial set up and very pricey but David got a very good look at the components. It is definitely an outside thing. You don't need to spend a lot of money on it as the very fine drip irrigation misters will work. Need clean water and a filter. Low flow (1gmp or lower) pump to pump the water thru the mist system.

I'm somewhat familiar with Permethrin and wouldn't use it in a mist. I'd consider inhaling ANY vapors from it to be at least somewhat bad for my health although it's probably preferable to West Nile Virus or any of the other diseases that mosquitoes and ticks carry.

It's used in treating clothes for it's insect repellant qualities. I have it for treating my hammock bug net and my hiking clothes. And yes, the military uses it on clothing as well.

It is lethal when in liquid form for cats and fish but different concentrations of it are used in farm/barn applications where it's around horses and other farm animals.

Understood about pesticides. But is there a natural pesticide that is minimal harmful?

Nothing inhaled by humans other than clean air is safe IMO!

I don't even like being in large cities because of the air quality but then I'm fussy about the air I breathe... :)

Good catch john. And..... It's a bio repellant or something ?

ok back to the misters, they work great outside in low humidity enviros. you really don't need a electric pump, a garden sprayer works for one sprayer. another note home depot sells the mister nozzles in brass, these are made for area misters and use less water then the irrigation type misters. I have never tried to use any type of additive for insect control. however if you are running a fan with the mister that would provide insect control. bugs do not like wind. unless we are talking locust. highdesertranger

A lot of people assume that pyrethrum is a safer alternative because it is natural. Here's an article by an organic gardening guy who has a long history of being right about this stuff. http://www.dirtdoctor.com/Pyrethrum-Dangers_vq2536.htm

I'm a true believer in using natural rather than synthetic products, herbs rather than drugs when possible, etc., but natural doesn't always equal safe. Cyanide is completely natural.

Obviously you have never been in South Ga. High humidity and yes, they did work. The ones David installed were of two kinds. One kind was attached to big fans on tall stands (very little breeze in that area) and the others were attached to the porch eves and around the hot tub in straight runs. Yes, these were the expensive brass ones. I know they were expensive otherwise the idiot who bought them would have never bought them. They did help keep the gnats at bay. In other words, no one at the party was doing the "South Georgia Wave".

My daughter & I will be going back to that area. If we end up staying there thru the winter, we may need to hook up a similar system but using drip irrigation misters instead but I do not plan on staying there thru the summer. The drip irrigation mister is not my idea as I don't have any original ideas. It is a method that has been used on several business in the area. It seems to work nicely. Plus much cheaper to install and maintain. The businesses tend to include a drip to their hanging planters and potted plants as well. Some put them on timers so they pop on intermittently and others just leave them on all day and turn them off at night when the business closes.

Misting fan inside sounds like a very direct and powerful means of evaporative cooling in hot deserts, I imagined using it in the van while on the Burning Man playa this year. I bought a 1.5 Liter PROJECT SOURCE garden spayer at LOWES and it puts out a decent mist. I sprayed with it in the van and found a continous misting inside the van on the Burning Man Playa could very well short electronics, wiring and cause water damages. Then I imagined a misting system instead which would mist in very short bursts on a timer, not drenching things and providing automated cooling with air exchange using a bucket swamp cooler from outside.

Never meant for inside in any context. Not sure why anyone would do this inside. But if you are outside sitting in a chair under a canopy it might be kid of nice

For inside use I think I would just place a fan so it hit me how I wanted it and use a spray bottle to mist myself. Far simpler and no risk to my electronics.

After BRC 2015, browsing COSTCO in Reno I found this:
http://www.costco.com/PureGuardian®...d-Cool-Mist-Humidifier.product.100223472.html
It has a cool mist function, which puts out a super-fine mist in a very direct form of evaporative cooling. Bought it and plan to put it in the van for next summer, as a very effective evaporative cooling system for the desert. It takes a tiny 30 watts in cool mist mode as well. That with the FANTASTIC FAN that will be bought and installed next month.

COSTCO also has this for those who want misting in two places (it's a 2 pack):

How much water can you carry and how quickly would the mist system use it up?

At our last stick/brick I put kit type misters on the patio. Kept it nice and cool on extreme heat days. It was hooked to a hose bib. Also had a ceilng fan to move air. Bugs didn't seem to want to fly into the mist.

Best to park next to a nice clean river, then you can jump in and cool off.Me and Vic camped next to a small river south of Show Low a few years back.Found a beautiful brass and turquois pipe sitting on a rock beside the river.Very useful.

The best cooling is good insulation on the top of your van....shade cloth.... and SHADE!
