I see the new bill just passed opens up Obama care and pays 100% of Cobra for 6 months I believe. Southern states that have not participated in expanding Medicare will really miss out on a lot of funding if they don’t so maybe things will change at least for a while!

Too many states seem to think it's not in their interest to have a healthier citizenry.

My Social Security is about $50 too high for me to qualify or Medicaid. I used to think it would be nice to have Medicaid cover the things Medicare doesn't, but I've changed my mind after seeing the troubles my friend has had getting his home state's Medicaid to approve things.

Every state has its own rules. You need to look at the website for the state you reside in. It is too confusing otherwise and you might get the wrong advice in a forum. For anything legal go to the government website for your information source. Othwerwise you could end up in a finacial disaster mess through a misunderstanding. .

For those Nomads who are Military Veterans and fall within the description of "poor",  I added some links to the website at the bottom of this post.  It deals mostly with medical attention for them where ever they would be in the USA.

Tha VA has really expanded its eligibility for vets - net worth is longer a consideration for example when it comes to co pays(see bottom of link). The best thing for vets to do if they are unsure if they are eligible for care is to simply contact the VA and talk to a rep about your particular situation. I use the Tuscaloosa AL VMC. I have to say the care there is excellent - way better than most civilian facilities I've used and the patients seen there range from middle class to very down on their luck but everyone receives the same treatment. It's worth checking into. Very low income vets are also eligible for a pension if you did not know that. This link also covers care for vets who travel extensively (anyone know one :D)

^^^ Yes!
Go to (your state) .gov to get the correct info that applies to you.
The only reason I keep my state (Ohio) as my residence is for cheap health insurance which is Medicare.

Yes--I have fallen into the insurance "gap" and there is no possibility for insurance for people in Kansas who do. I had been on obamacare until I lost my job in January and immediately lost coverage with no other options. If a person can only work part-time in Kansas, you have no options. I hope to be able to find a place where I can get coverage.
The "insurance gap" can be bad in every state.  The month before my 65th birthday, I had to pay $1200 (per month) for health insurance.  Turning 65 saved me a huge amount of money in health insurance costs!

If you get a debilitating illness or injury then you can apply for medicaid. There is short term medicaid that will terminate after you are recovered enough to work. It is good to be aware of this before something happens to you such as a bad accident, serious illness that requires hospitalization etc. It is your backup plan.

Good Lord, those are some fantastic links for info and resources! Between that and all the great info and people here I feel like I struck the motherload.  :D THANK YOU for that!

I wonder if there would be enough interest here to create a "Military Veterans Interest category"?  That'b great.

If you want a new category contact an administrator. I think your idea for one for veterans is an excellent idea as there are many special issues for available resources for that that are not relevant to the general forum population.

FYI, in Arizona, you can have substantial assets and as long as your income is within parameters, you will qualify for Medicaid (called AHCCCS). Theoretically a millionaire could qualify, but I've never heard of abuse of it. I dont know about other states, but many of them, including New Mexico have asset limits.

So if your income is low and you don't want to spend down what money you have left, Arizona is a good place to be a resident for Medicaid.

Not letting disabled people on this anymore. I had ACCCS years ago but no longer qualify because of disabling injuries. If I could still work I would qualify.

I’ve heard good things about Mass and their medical care system. I got Medi-Cal and it was useless. Not one of my doctors accepted it so I went to the phone book just down the list of local doctors and not one doctor accepted it.
I have a friend who’s on it who’s in good health and a hoarder so he doesn’t have super high cleanliness standards. He found one doctor who took it. The guy didn’t speak English (doctors are tested for written English not spoken here) and there was blood all over the walls. He came home pale and sick looking said he literally ran out of the place. I ended up having a relative pay for “California Care” a subsidized (haha) pre-Obamacare system-no difference except with Obamacare we can no longer go out of state even within network. It cost $1600 per month with $1000 deductible and $25 prescriptions. California is not for poor, middle class or upper middle class. It is for millionaires and billionaires. Medi-cal sounds fantastic and it’s useless.
