I live in my VW Jetta and have SERIOUS coffee addiction. I'd really like to find some way to make coffee in the morning without being too super conspicuous. I've had a few great suggestions and I was looking at one of those cool coffee pots that plugs into the cigarette lighter. My biggest problem is that I stealth camp and don't want to draw too much attention with something like a grill on the trunk. Any thoughts?

PS: Yes. I recognize that this could be solved by just quitting coffee but, for all our sakes, that isn't going to happen right now.

Several things come to mind. Do you have a good thermos? If so, you can store water hot enough to make coffee overnight or longer.

Ah, but the hot water? If you ask, some convenience stores or maybe even the campus cafeteria might let you fill a thermos from the hot water spigot on their coffee maker. A 12 volt Smart Mug could take up to 20 minutes to heat water, and from reading your blog, it sounds like you don't drive enough to keep the starter battery up and heat water every day. I would not suggest you use an open flame in the vehicle, but is there a place nearby where you could use a backpacking stove to heat water, fill a thermos, and return to your overnight location discretely? Along those lines, a hot pot that plugs into a regular electric outlet could work for you, too. They heat water very quickly, so if you can find an outlet in a good location, you could heat the water, pour it into a thermos, and carry it "home" for later use.

You mentioned instant coffee in your blog, and it sounds like you haven't found one you like. I think the kind in the "tea" bags is pretty decent, but they are expensive. This may be too hard-core for some, but I have filled a metal tea ball with ground coffee and dunked it in a mug of hot water for several minutes. Just watch out for the last swig! These days, I usually make a single cup with a Melitta coffee cone (available for about $3 at many grocery stores). I use regular coffee filters instead of the conical ones because they are much less expensive. The cone doesn't take up much space, disposal of the grounds is easy, clean-up minimal, and the coffee quite good.

Lots of options. Please let us know what works for you.

Vickie

The formatting here leaves something to be desired, but at least this place is active, and you don't get 10,000 emails that you can't possibly follow a conversation in (Vandwellers Yahoo group)

I got the taster's choice variety pack and it doesn't have french roast in it! What a jip, I'll have to try it out.

Bri, how rad is that thing? So lightweight and compact, yet you can have actual coffee as long as you can boil water.

Butternut...I found out about that coffee from mike and Heidi who are both pretty coffee savvy. They told me about Taster's Choice but the particular flavor was something Like "Supreme, or Deluxe" now it has been renamed by the company to the French Roast variety (sez so on the label.) Kind of hard to find...I found it once at Walgeens Drug and another time at a good Albertsons Supermarket.

ShaunSquid, it is very rad! I have often used a filter cone in fact we have used a goldplated stainless steel filter in a plastic cone but I like the foldability of the GSI one....I either make coffee that way or in a french press....
Bri

Here is the post we did on coffee and how we deal with it on the road. As Bri mentioned, the name changed to French Roast. Good stuff though! The regular isn't bad either for that matter!

http://www.vantramps.com/2010/10/coffee-solution.html

For heating the water, Heidi used to use a 12V cup coil sorta gismo that she says really worked well and is quite stealthy Here is a link to a dual voltage version.

http://www.amazon.com/Travel-Immersion-Water-Heater-Voltage/dp/B000AXS0UE

Hope that helps!

Ladies, Gentlemen, you are the best. I am trying out the french roast and Columbian that was recommended and I'm seriously considering a heating coil. I even came across a small melitta the other day! Thanks for all your help

Some of the bigger Truck Stops and some of the RV dealers sell quite an assortment of 12v appliances. I have also seen 12v cappacino makers.

I have a 12v Hot Water maker, you can make Boiling water in it, and you can also drop in a can of chow and heat it up real good too!

Perhaps a simple little Propane stove, single unit and leave a door/window cracked for air would work just as good.

Best of Luck

I have a small 5 cup coffee pot by GE from walmart. It runs fine off the inverter, and only takes a few minutes to make coffee.
