For those that don't have a Dash Cam... get one!!! They aren't that expensive. You can find some very affordable ones out there now because they are becoming so common. You already have insurance on your (van, car, RV). The Dash Cam is just better insurance and it is only a one time fee. I have bought one for all my kids and don't want them driving without one. It is just too easy for an accident to happen and it then becomes a he said she said story. I have heard too many stories of someone running a red light just to tell the police on the scene that they had a green light and the other person ran the red. Unless there are witnesses or it is obvious from the scene who was at fault who does the cop give the ticket to? The Dash Cam doesn't lie.

Just understand that if YOU'RE the one who screwed up and caused the accident - and you delete the dash cam footage - you're now guilty of tampering with evidence, which is a crime.  But it's my property, you say!  Yeah, but if the other guy notices that you have a dash cam, his lawyer can subpoena it and the courts WILL order you to cough it up.

Dash cams are new technology.  As they become more and more common - possibly even standard factory equipment - it wouldn't surprise me if the states pass laws authorizing the cops to seize them for examination whenever there is an accident investigation.

Standard Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV.

I remember an incident, several years ago- Husband was pulling out onto a (college town) one way street. Some yahoo in a fart-car was apparently doing almost freeway speeds in a residential area, and destroyed/totaled my husband's rig. Both filed. Took the insurance companies almost a month to get around to doing anything.. By that time, the other guy had magically fabricated a passenger, when there was none, to say that my hubby pulled out suddenly right in front of them.. and No, they weren't speeding. So we were out an almost new car and our rates went up. Fun.

I think it would always be the person in your husbands position in this fault as he was pulling onto the street, the car coming had the right of way. Of course tough to prove if he was speeding or not, humans are terrible at judging the speed of things coming at us.

Newer cars actually have black boxes in them, that could tell you the speed the cars were going at impact. My aunt filed a hit and run and they wanted permission to access hers.

Can a rear-mounted camera be used live for backing up, and also have the recording functionality?

How about night-vision for looking at bumps in the night while camping?

Just a heads up as most people I've talked to don't realize it. Colorado Law requires you to report any accident, even if it happens on private property. Kind of screwy, and I'm sure many don't get reported. But we found out the hard way when a cop rang our doorbell at 1:00 in the morning. My son had backed into someone in a parking lot. Fortunately he had found the driver and exchanged info so it was obvious he wasn't trying to get away with anything. And the cop was even cool about me coming to the door with a 9mm in my hand. Probably a common occurrence for him in the area I live in.
