I poisonally has a 98 Cherokee XJ with a manual transmission.  I shopped Craigslist for a year before I found a reasonable deal on a manual.  You would think that in Colorado most people would have manual tranny's.  But NO!!!!!!  The one I finally found had all of the right things wrong with it. I.E. nothing really expensive...  It had 200+k miles on it... I ended up blowing the engine about 4 years ago, and put a rebuilt one in there.  Still a great vehicle...

I'm not currently pulling my cargo trailer with it because I got such a great deal on this 2001 F150 with the Triton V8.  It only had 58k miles on it.  Literally an "only drove it to town on Sunday" vehicle.  It was like new on the inside when I got it.

But back to the XJ... I vote manual ... I hope you have an easier time finding one.  Good luck!
