I am currently staying at Mono Hot Springs in the Sierra National Forest and am looking for tribe members to travel with.  I am curious, are there any fellow nomads nearby?  If so please PM me.

Is that Mono Hot Springs near Lk Edison? Bad timing, there is a huge fire north of you that has Yosemite Valley closed right now, and it's around 105F out in the CA central valley. Don't know if you've been there, but you might be better heading up Hwy 108 or Hwy 4 and over to Hwy 395. You can track the fires and smoke on these sites. Ferguson is growing like an SOB.

Currently in the North Cascades. I would head over to the Ancient Brislecone Forest above Bishop and beat the heat at over 10000 feet unless there's smoke.

I am in Pahrump Nv was thinking about going either to Flagstaff AZ or go North through Idaho . Tentatively the beginning of August.

Thanks for the info.  The smoke is bad here but the temps are worse in the valley.  I have to stay here till I recieve some mail by general delivery at the local post office then I'm out of here.  Looking for options.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Bishop is less than 35 miles from here as the bird flies, but is nearly a 7 hr drive.  Being so close to where I am now, I would imagine they are having problems w smoke as well.  That's too bad, I love the area!

I've got to watch my gas money, so Idaho would be too far North.  I am considering Bridgeport.  The smoke isn't bad in the valley and the temps are upper 80s to low 90s.  Warmer that I would like but w elevation comes the smoke. :s  I haven't heard of any fires near flagstaff.  That could be a possibility.  Let me know when your plans firm up if you are interested in a travel partner.

I track these fires every day because I've been wanting to travel, but most of the CA mountains north of Bakerfield are smoky. Both the Yosemite and Redding fires are growing enormously and not much contained. Maybe one day the feds will learn that proactive management is better than spending all of your resources trying to fight the fires. At least around critical places like Yosemite. This is the 4th major fire just west of the park entrance in the past several years.

You can get to Bridgeport by going over Hwy 108, Sonora Pass, it looks ok, but you probably don't want to pull a trailer over the pass.

There is also a lot of BLM land a few miles east of the Sierra in Nevada if you look around. And of course there is Natl Forest everywheres there.

Just north of Bridgeport is Hwy 108 it will take you over Sonora pass. The Stanislaus NF is quite large and the town of Strawberry is at 6,000 feet. Not much there though. Twain Harte would be the next town with a good sized grocery store, (I used to live near there).
I was thinking either Flagstaff or head North in Nevada on Hwy 93 ad take it into Ely and then maybe North into Idaho.
I have a Dr. Appointment on the 31st, so can not solidify a plan until I know if I have to stick around for more tests.

If I could I would be in central CA. right now instead of TX. I'm like Danny though, Dr. appt on the 3rd of Aug. and see if anything else needed. This is about like last summer and fall around Yosemite. Waiting to see what the fires are going to do. Made it out in early September but Yosemite still had smoke drifting in.

Right now there are few fires in MT or northern ID, but that can change tomorrow. Last year at this time, there were dozens up there.

Oops, I hadn't realized it but those JPEGs in post #11 are being updated continuously.

Things are still up in the air here. I have another test in a week, and then still don't know.

Testing and still not know gets nerve wracking. Been doing that for a year and a half now but I have managed to get some trips in and about to get more. Come hail or high water.

Nothing major to worry about here, just the average non life threatening stuff from being 63.
I don't know which was harder, getting old, or being old.

I know it's gonna sound sophomoric, but I've found there are some sayings that help you get through the day, and/or just help you to get started in the morning. Short and pithy. I have a few on the wall next to the computer. I never worried about this stuff when I was younger (DUH).

A year ago, I got caught up in a civil suit, and it just ended 2 1/2 weeks ago. I'm happy I'm not in jail today. I'm too old to go to prison. Major reason I bought the van and travel when I can. The future is not set. The one thing I learned is, you have to defend yourself, you can't just lie down, no matter what.
