SirJoey, have you considered having an auction to sell you stuff? Putz
Thanx for the suggestion, but prolly wouldn't work in my case. To have it HERE where I live would be nearly impossible cuz of the location. I'm out in the boonies. As for hauling it all off to an auction house (there's one about 20 some miles from here), I'm not physically able to, not to mention my old truck is on it's last leg, so I don't see any way, realistically.

Pretty sure I just have to hope I can unload at least the big stuff to people who are willing to come here & get it. In the end, whatever's left, I can offer to the folks taking the home. If they don't want it, I'll be forced to pitch it all out in the yard, & haul it off a little at a time, whenever I'm making unavoidable trips to town.

Well, I went & picked up my buddy this morning, brought him here, he got the old fuel pump removed & installed the new one, only to discover it was the wrong fuel pump! So, off we went on a 50-mile-round-trip to town to return the pump, only to be told they didn't have it in stock. Not surprising, since this is a 38-year-old motorhome we're talking about here.

Anyway, the fuel pump is supposed to be in tomorrow morning, so I get to make another 50-mile-round-trip to pick it up, & we'll try it again tomorrow. The bad thing is, we don't even know for sure if this is the problem. I PRAY it is, & that we'll get the ol' dinosaur started tomorrow.

After that, we begin the daunting task of cleaning out my little barn, in preparation for crammin' it full!

Made the 25-mile trek to town again this morning to pick up the special-order fuel pump & exchange the previous one for it. Unfortunately, since I had purchased the last one from another one of their stores, & it also was a special-order, they wouldn't take it back. Said I had to return it to the store I purchased it from in another town, even though they're both O'Reillys, so I had to pay for the new one as well. I'll have to return the other one to the other strore on some other day.

On the way home, I picked up my buddy, brought him here again (he has no vehicle at present), & we finished the install of the new pump. He did most of the work, but I helped. Bigger job than we anticipated, but we managed. Unfortunately, bummers for me..... no dice. Still won't start. More wasted money. Now we're thinking carb rebuild. He said he can rebuild it if I buy the kit, so soon, I'll be making ANOTHER 50-mile-round-trip, to buy MORE parts, in hopes ONCE AGAIN, that we can get the ol' dinosaur running. Geeze, will it never end with this thing?

Afterwards, managed to get more stuff packed up, & more stuff thrown out, but haven't even STARTED on cleaning out the barn, cuz by the time we finished working on the motorhome, it was 99 degrees outside, & WAY OVER 100 in the barn, so we're gonna try to start on it early tomorrow morning. The motorhome will have to wait for awhile, cuz I'm already behind schedule on packing & emptying rooms. Techincally, I haven't emptied ANY, cuz none of this crap has actually been taken out to the barn. A few things have departed the premises, a fair amount has been packed & relocated to other rooms closer to the door, but 99% of it (so far) is still in the house. :-(

In the meantime, the house looks worse than EVER! Looks like a dang tornado came through the place!

Thought I'd hear something today from my "takers", who told me a few days ago that their loan would be finalized on Tuesday (today), but haven't heard a thing so far.

...and the saga continues.

Hi SirJoey. I wanted to let you know even if the carb is bad it should still fire. Here are a couple things to check. If you look down the throat of the carb and push the throttle you should see a spray of gas if there is then your getting fuel to the carb. If your getting fuel and still wont fire, check for spark. I dont know if it is old enough to have points in the distributor. If it does and it has been sitting, they may not be sparking anymore. You can file the contacts of the points and that should get them firing again. If you have anymore questions let me know. If it will run we can get it started.
And dont feel bad. Im going thru the same thing you are. Cant believe how much crap I have.
LOL, I know, right? :p

The thing is, if I pour gas down the carb, she'll start right up, run a few seconds till she burns off the gas, & dies. Then, no matter how much I crank her, she won't hit till I pour more gas in.

Before I ever decided to change the fuel pump, I had already pulled the fuel line loose at the carb & checked that little filter in the carb. I blew through it easily, no problem there. Then, while I had the line loose, I cranked the engine to see if she was pumping fuel. Yep, big stream shootin' out on the engine, but some guy told me it could still be the fuel pump, so that's why I decided to replace it anyway. I figured even if that wasn't the problem, at least it would be one less thing to go out on me later, & being an old style mechanical pump, it was only $20, but given my current financial state, that's still substantial. Not to mention 3 round trips to town so far, plus one more still to go when I return the wrong pump later. So total gas cost will be around $28, which ironically, is nearly 50% more than the cost of the pump itself! It figures.

When you say you blew thru the filter. was it still in the carb? If your getting a good stream of gas at the carb, the fuel pump should be fine. look in the carb and push the throttle. If it sprays then you have fuel in the float bowl of the carb. If there is no fuel in the carb then the float could be stuck. If there is fuel in the carb then you probably have a plugged jet and/or the accelerator pump could be bad. Try blowing into the line that goes into the carb. If you cant blow thru it the float is stuck and it wont let gas into the float bowl of the carb.
No, I took the filter out. It was fine. No way to blow through the line while it's attached to the carb though. It's a solid steel line from the fuel pump to the carb, with no breaks in it.

I don't know that much about carbs, so float bowl, jets, accelerator pump, all that stuff is kinda greek to me. All I know is this guy says it needs to be rebuilt, & I sure can't fix it myself, so I'll have to go with whatever he's willing to do.

What I DO know, is we HAVE to get it started before the home movers arrive in 50 days, cuz the motorhome is in the way. If we don't get it started by then, maybe I can find somebody with a full-size truck to hook onto to it with a tow strap, & drag it outta the way, even though it IS a pretty heavy ol' class C.

Ya, from what you have said and done it sounds like a carb issue. Just make sure if it is rebuilt you clean all the ports and blow it out with air. If gas isnt getting to the carb something is plugged.
Thanx Sidat, for the pointers & advice! I appreciate it! :)

Yeah, I'm inclined to believe it's SOME kind of carb problem, regardless of which one. Geeze, I hate carbs. Wish this thing was injected.

Hey, at least it DOES have an electronic ignition, though! Prolly an after-market installation by one of the previous owners, cuz this thing is a '74 model.

Good luck with your moving preps! How long do U have? Or are do U even have a deadline? I've already used up 10 of my 60 days. Seems like when there's a deadline, it approaches quickly!

No deadline, but the sooner the better. I just want to be done with it. Its holding up my new life.
Inching ever closer to the closing of the deal on the house. Mailed the second letter to the mortgage co today, authorizing them to title the house in the "takers" names, & mailing the title to them, once the loan has been paid off.

The mortgage co is supposed to be sending me a bill of sale to sign & return, then upon receipt of payment, they'll make us wait 21 more days, & it will finally be over.

By then, I should be down to only about 2 weeks remaining before I have to have the place cleaned out & ready for the movers to take it away. Can't wait for the DEAL to be finalized, but I'm certainly in no hurry to begin life in that ratty old motorhome with no facilities, that's for sure.

Oh well, U can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, right?

ratty old motorhome with no facilities
Bite your tonge SirJoey! She's a gem in the making and an experiance waiting for you to enjoy.

Dragonfly
LOL! Words of wisdom, to be sure!
Thanx! :)

The guy who's attempting to rebuild the carb got it back together, MOSTLY, but he can't figure out how to finish it. There's some linkages, small parts, & the choke pull-off still laying out here on a table on my front porch, & he doesn't know how to finish it. Neither do I, cuz I wasn't even there when he tore it all apart. I was working in the barn at the time. He won't even be back till next week, & I don't know what to do about getting the carb finished. I bought the kit for it, but it doesn't do me any good if he can't get it all back together. Wotta mess. :-(

With less than 6 weeks to go, another major setback...

My friend who was rebuilding the carb, & who was gonna be a major help in getting a bunch of this crap moved into the barn, has bailed out & moved to another town with his girlfriend. I don't blame him, but it sure leaves me in a predicament, short on help, & running outta time, with a WHOLE lotta work yet to be done.

As for the carb, since he never finished it, now I'll have to take it to someone who knows how to finish assembling it.

As for everything else, it's beginning to look like the final solution may be an open door & a really big shovel... :-(

My "house takers" showed up today, & we jointly signed the bill of sale! One step closer! Now, they're supposed to pay off the mortgage co, & hopefully, this will all go through before the mortgage co deducts another house payment from my bank account in only 9 more days.

Then, the mortgage co is supposed to make us wait 3 more weeks (for SOME odd reason), & it's a done deal. Can't wait till I have verification that I won't be making any more house payments!

Meanwhile, as my deadline inches ever nearer, & nearly half of my remaining time already expired, I'm nowhere NEAR the halfway point of emptying the house. :-(

Maybe I'll get lucky & the "takers" won't be ready to move the house by the deadline, thus buying me some more time, but I'm certainly not counting on it!

Joey,
You are experiencing the same thing that I was when I was trying to get everything out of my house. It was so overwhelming for me I almost gave up! I had no help whatsoever, even having 6 children, and other family who were close, and being sick to top it all off. You are probably like me and have to go thru every single tiny thing in your house, I had to stop doing that and stop worrying over what to keep and what to give away so much and figure out how to speed things up a bit. What I finally did when it was getting too close to the "have to be out" time was just give everything away that I didn't absolutly have to keep, I even started sitting stuff out by the road with "free" signs on it, and the stuff I did need to keep I just had to start throwing into boxes. Just do one room at a time, it's easier that way and mark the boxes by the room and you can always go back later and go thru the stuff better when you have more time. We tend to covet way more stuff than we need to, and I'll tell you right now, it's refreshing and freeing when your done and can sit back and wonder why you worried so much over it all. I absolutely understand how you feel right now, I worked on my house everyday from the time I got up till the time I went to bed for over 6 weeks, and everyday I thought I wasn't going to ever get done and finally one day I went in there and had one room left with the last load to the storage and I was so happy it was almost overwhelming! All I could think of was that it was almost time for me to be on the road! I promise, you will get it done, and then you can also start on your new life journey! Just hang in there and don't spend so much time trying to go thru every little thing right now, you can go back to it later! Good luck Joey!

I had a hard time cleaning out my shed. Previous tenants left furniture and stuff. I put ads in craiglists, tried to get other people i knew, they all said they wanted it but never actually showed or said they will in weeks. This went on for like a month. I set it by the road with a free sign and it was gone in 6 minutes.

Good luck, if you were nearby id lend you my back for a few hours
Yeah Judy, it IS overwhelming, & through it all, I've only had help 2 or 3 days, at least so far, but I still think (& HOPE) they'll be back to help me a bit more before I run completely out of time.

I'm not really going through everything, but trying to go through as much as possible, in an effort to lighten my load as much as possible, given my deadline. The more stuff I can sort through NOW, the less I have to move, store, etc. I have to admit, I've made a serious dent in thinning the stuff out, by giving away, throwing away, & selling stuff, but there's still so much as to be overwhelming! Plus, there's still a monstrous amount of stuff to go through in my barn. The loft is finished & ready to accept whatever I wanna store up there, but I've barely scratched the surface of the downstairs part, which has to be cleaned out before I start carrying boxes out there.

The bad part is, there are a few LARGE items I don't wanna part with, which I can't move by myself. Not many, but a few. Hoping I can at least get some help with THOSE.

On a more positive note, as of this morning, there's one less large item for me to deal with.... the 7-piece oak dinette. The "takers" called me this morning & said they'll take it! She said they're sending a check today! That's GREAT news, cuz it puts a little money in my pocket, & I don't have to do anything with the dinette, just leave it sitting here! :)

I appreciate that! :)

Just an update... the takers emailed me, saying they've actually sent the payoff check to the mortgage co, who should receive it by Monday!

With any luck, I've made my last house payment, & in about 3 more weeks, this'll be a done deal, a scant 2 weeks before my deadline for being outta the house.

Now, if I could just get summa this crap moved outta here... :-(

Another thing you can do is to call a local estate dealer and they'll come look over everything you don't want and make you an offer. If you except it they'll come back with a crew, box everything up, load it all on their truck and take it away. And they'll do it in one day. You won't make as much money, but if it will save you another house payment it might be worth it.

As far as needing help to lift the heavy stuff there's always someone in any town who needs or wants a days worth of work and will work cheap.
