Hi all. I am still looking around the forum for my van related issues but I was wondering if there is a thread here that helps people grow their social media profiles like twitter and youtube?

Every time I try and do some research I find a sub for sub and follow for follow which is a great idea, but the places I found are full of kids and gaming channels.

I think it would be great if we could do something like that for the Van/RV community. Forums like this are great but when I am out in my van I am mostly on twitter or youtube when looking for some suggestions.

Sorry if there is already a thread up about this or let me know if you think you would be interested in setting it up.

Now off to explore the forums some more :)

Kylie

My perception is that most people here avoid social media like the plague, and even if knowledgeable, would rather chew off their own leg than help wannabe spammers increase their traffic.

But maybe others will feel inclined to be more helpful.

I'm afraid I'm not even sure what that means tbh.

Judging by the number of nomadic and minimalist channels on Youtube, there certainly seems to be a lot of interest out there. Twitter tho strikes me as a much different thing, one that I really have no interest in doing...seems like the opposite of rest and relaxation   ;)

So you are hoping to have all van/nomad community social media -types to be lumped together somehow?

many here and other van/vehicle dwellers have limited data. so they are very choosy on the sites they visit. on this forum you must have at least 10 substantial posts before you can link to your personal site. also you must not just post redirects you must give an explanation of the site where you are redirecting people to. highdesertranger

Well, this forum is a type of social media...

All forums by definition are social, and the forum has lots of media. The owner of the forum is also very active on Youtube.

Kylie, I hope you can build your channel, its not easy. There is SO much competition and the clickbait some youtubers use seems cheap.

A 30 second video about washing a car with a scantily clad female will get a million hits in 2 days but a well produced video about say, car repair, will get 100 views a month sometimes.

I dont see the harm in posting a link to your channel...but the general consensus here might be negative.

I have a channel on Youtube but I have never promoted it here because the channel contents have nothing to do with RVs, vans, or living on the road. And my channel is 100% un-monetized so I dont get a penny from Youtube no matter how many times they are watched.

The 'filter' that HDR mentions is a good one, to help curb random spammers...so I dont want you to get in trouble...

But if your videos are about vans, living on the road, and maybe earning money from youtube while mobile, or something related,  it might be acceptable to the mods to at least mention it here in response to my question:

Whats the link? Or the channel name?

Whats the link?

As HDR posted earlier we have rules about new members posting links. Until the required number of posts are met please feel free to PM or email the link to anyone who requests it.

Bob, the forum owner did a 2 part series on his blog about developing a web presence. Here's part 1:

Thanx for the reply. I totally understand. I'm just a nerd and it is pretty much my only social contact apart from work. I am looking to change that once I am on the road.

LOL yeah it is the opposite of rest and relaxation at the moment. Twitter has a strong Van/RV community but does have a lot of Instagram/Pinterest "glamor" posers that I am trying to fight through to get to the real experiences.

Well more of a spot for people that have helpful channels like Bob's, that can share ideas and tips not just for social media but for video ideas. For example, I am in Canada at the moment and finding it very hard to find related help for my area.

Oh for sure. I didn't come on over here to slap my links everywhere  :p I keep running into sites and forums like that and it is the opposite of what I wanted.
I have visited this site quite a bit but was looking for Canadian-based information but without any luck. So I am here to get some help on my van build for now and if I have to I will hunt all the Canadian information down once I am in my van. :)

Thanx for the reply.

I totally understand what people are saying about data and other social media can be a pain. I just think if there was a safe moderated place for people to share their relatable channels it could be handy.

The forums are great but for some of us, we need to see things in action. I can read instructions but some things I just need to see it to for the lightbulb to go off at the ah ha moment.

My channels is just me preparing for van life, working on my van and asking viewer's questions on some of the issues I have bumped into along the way. If you can tell by my posts I am not good at getting what is in my head down in writing.  :p  With my videos I can show what I am having problems with and then later I can show how I overcame it. Hopefully down the road I can help people skip all the hard ways of doing things

I will hold off sharing my link or channel for now as I don't want to upset anyone. I want to be part of this community. Besides, I do have plenty of photos that might help me get my questions across easier.

Now off to read some more rules so I don't get myself ran outta town  :s

I'm on twitter so PM me a link and I'll follow your account from there.

Van Dwelling Life you have over the minimum posts so it's ok to post your links. remember to post a description with the link. actually if you have a question ask here, then if you are having a hard time explaining do a link. highdesertranger

Folks, this is just a friendly reminder that many of us have limited bandwidth so we ask that you carefully trim any quotes you include to the bare minimum. When you are reading on a phone, and you have to read the same post twice to get a new comment, it can be frustrating--especially if there are pictures!

Be kind and trim!! :)

I am completely opposed to the use of "social media". That is. Twitter, FB, Snapchat, etc.

I use Amazon only through a shell account...and still don't like it.

I value my privacy very highly. I will not give away my personal data to corporations that in turn sell it off to other commercial metadata companies.

It is harder all the time to keep distance and keep information flow.

If there was a twitter community, I would never see it. Same with FB, etc.

I am not some fringe nut...I am more mainstream on this issue everyday. I would think that van dwellers are even more concerned for their privacy than the population in general.

VanKitten, hey its just not that simple.

If you have a cellphone, smartphone, credit card, bank account, paypal account, drivers license, passport, vehicle license plates, insurance, get medical care, or you drive on toll roads, or pass thru internal border patrol check stations, or drive thru cities that use license plate scanners, you are already on millions of databases.

Not to mention that you are online here and probably other places many times a day, and the IP address of who you are, what you looking at, and the websites you visit are all recorded.

The very fact that someone is online, and plugged into society even on a smartphone or aircard/hotspot, means your every movement and online activity is known about.

No way to get around all this.

The worse offenders are Facebook and any thirdparty apps you add either to Facebook in a browser or on your smartphone.

Even a weather app or a flashlight app can track you and report your habits and location back to a central server.

So, it might feel pro-active to stay off the main social media websites, but the fact that you are online and surfing the web means you are far from invisible, and your privacy, and all of our privacy, is long gone.

And there are ways to become less visible to 'big brother'...secure phones and secure web browsers DO exist, but you cannot erase the data that is already out there.

this thread has gone off topic so I'm going to close it. Feel free to open a new thread on whatever topic you choose, elsewhere

I was on my phone when I closed this thread. I was confused with regard to which thread I was on and wanting to close. Thanks to tx2aturgis for PMing me and letting me know. (SERIOUSLY!!! I appreciate the heads up and the way it was done, with class and without judgement or attitude)

I've reopened the thread. My apologies to the OP and members.

What is it you  need?

Happy to help with anything I can!

Edit: Just checked out your link from the other thread you just started. More than willing to help with any Cdn info you require but it will have to be by PM here or through threads here on the forum. Cdn data prices are way to high for my taste so I won't/don't use what I have to watch Vlogs...sorry!
