Hi! My name is Sunshine and I'm new to the whole concept of van dwelling. My wife and I (and our two puppies) travel extensively for our business (we sell jewelry and oddities at conventions). We're from South Florida but moved Jersey City (basically NYC) last year to be close to family and shorten the drive to many shows. We have a 2007 Honda Odyssey that we use to haul all of our stuff; it worked for a while, but we are just starting to grow out of it.

We finally came to the realization that it doesn't make sense to pay rent for an apartment that we are hardly ever at. After some lengthy conversations and nudging from friends, I finally convinced the wife that an RV (or something similar) was the way to go. However, we also have some debt that we'd like to pay off and we don't want to add anymore, so we decided to kit out the odyssey for sleeping and get a small cargo trailer. We aren't looking for anything fancy, just a way to be comfortable for travel in between shows (sleeping hunched over the steering wheel at rest stops has gotten really old, really fast). We plan on maintaining a small base with friends or family as we need a place to make things until we get a larger living space to travel with.

Thanks for reading!

Hi sisterearth!

Cyndi, hi! Thanks so much and I totally agree! I can't wait to upgrade to the RV. But, we figured that we're both already used to driving around in the van and being all cramped when we try to catch a few hours of a nap, so if we put in a bed and some creature comforts, we'll feel like we're living in the lap of luxury. Lol! I'm also wondering if we can get a small table for her to work on small projects while I drive. I'm following TheGroveGuy's example of how he "tricked out" his Sienna. We'll see. We have about 6 months before we end our lease, so we can try a few things out.

I think you have a great plan!! How big of a trailer can the Odyssey comfortably handle? I 6x10 enclosed cargo trailer is about 1300 pounds and is a lot of room but a 6x12 would be better and does not weigh much more. Build a 6 foot workbench and that would still leave you a lot of room for supplies and your personal belongings.

Here is a friends conversion of a 6x12 trailer and I know that's not what you are doing, but it will give you an idea of how much room there is in one.

I'd think the Odyssey could handle that and makes your plan very easily doable.
