I've been living in a (mostly stationary) 28 foot long 5th wheel for two years now. Time flies. I've enjoyed living smaller and the lower bills, allowing me to work fewer hours.

A few weeks ago, when Hurricane Matthew was approaching the area, I discovered that my truck's break controller had stopped working. I ended up packing a bag, leaving the RV behind, and leaving with just the truck. I think the dog was pretty confused at  first but we ended up having a good time exploring.

The 5er came through Matthew fine but the experience of living in just the truck for a few days  made me start thinking. I'm considering downsizing to either a tiny trailer or a van so I can actually travel more instead of being mostly stuck in one place.

Welcome to the CRVL forums, Kerrsa! Great idea! Who doesn't enjoy traveling and exploring!

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the CRVL Form   :)

Interesting how life's lessons come to us, half compromised half improvised,  isn't it ???

But you've grown from the experience and realized a new horizon is possible.   That little taste
of moving to avoid Matthew was all it took for you to realize the possibilities of a small mobile habitat.
Perhaps this will be a lesson for others reading here.

I'd invite you to view my web sites below.  The first one shows how I fitted out my first Van as a simple week end camper and extended travel vehicle.  I've also created a page showing a utility trailer with the basics in it to be towed by a Van.  Thus the Van could be driven around in a town or for day trips while the Trailer is parked somewhere. (paid parking area, State Park Campground etc)   Thus real flexibility.  Then hooked back up to the Van when ready to travel on.  (all of this in less than 28 ft)

The second site is for planning our trips, side trips,  finding Campgrounds, State & National Parks with camping,  weather reports,  and much much more when you actually travel.

Good luck your ventures.

Welcome aboard the good ship CRVL Kerrsa!
If you want to live and travel in a smaller rig , this is a great place to get help figuring out how to make your dream a reality.
Don't be shy and ask all the questions you want.

Hi! Funny, I was just talking to a guy I met at a state park out west who was coming to the same conclusion. Partly, he's wanting to get out into the back country more. And partly he finds RV parks too crowded and noisy. Personally, I love having the flexibility to camp just about anywhere.
