sorry, back in post #8 bullfrog mention the 10 gallon rule that BLM has. the rule is for a black tank. for review the BLM has a rule that without a 10 gallon black tank you are restricted to where you can stay in the Long Term Visitor Areas(LTVA). again sorry for the confusion. highdesertranger

highdesertranger - Does the 10 gallon rule allow for composting toilets?

^^ No, it does not.

3 years ago I asked a ranger at the RTR if there were any plans for including separating toilets in the regulations and was told that no plans were contemplated.

He went on to tell me that he, personally, would waive the 500 ft rule but that it would be up to an individual ranger in each case.

Since I've never stayed at an LTVA, I have no first hand knowledge as to whether or not my C-Head would be acceptable or not. Personally, I don't see any reason to pay to stay at any of the LTVAs when there is dispersed camping adjacent to all that I've seen including Holtville.

Keep in mind also that some of the LTVAs don't have any toilet facilities on site and consequently there is no 500' foot rule but rather a rule that you can't stay there at all.
