Hello good people, I'm SolarSoda and about to embark upon my first mobile adventure. And I am more excited than words can say!! This is a dream a long time in the making.

It started about 4 years ago when I became re-interested in camping (last time I went camping I was in high school, and that was actually a backpacking adventure through a stretch of the Appalachian Trail; my love of the great outdoors was thoroughly kindled from that trip!). I wanted a tent, a sleeping bag, and a few baggies of GORP! I work in the news industry (in production; I'm a techie) and I was feeling the pull of the great outdoors on me tremendously. I made wishlists on Amazon, and dreamed.

That evolved into a desire to go backpacking, like I did on that high school trip. I researched the death out of it; I made more wishlists on Amazon, and I dreamed.

Followed that line of thought for awhile, then I began to look at RVs, and then I discovered people who live in them, and one thing led to another and it all settled into a desire to live in a van. Like on purpose.

Fast forward to now. My landlord decided to put the home we rent from her up for sale. That was the beginning of November. To everyone's astonishment it sold in less than a month. After I got over the initial shock and had some heart-to-heart discussions with the hubby, he finally got on board with the idea of living in a van. Long story short, we're actually looking for an RV instead because it fits our needs better.

But who knows? Our adventure is only just beginning! We have to be moved out by the end of the month.

Otherwise, I have devoured as much information as I could from Bob's website since I stumbled upon it a couple years ago. I bought the Kindle version of his book (and read it no less than 3 times), I've watched several of his videos, both before and after the switch to his own channel, and I've researched a couple other gurus in recent years. I love the way Bob explains things. He's really good at teaching, and has a way of making you feel like you're just chatting over tea.

I can't wait to finally apply what I've learned in a real world scenario! Stay tuned!

Welcome to the forum. There are a number of us using RV's here.

Welcome to the CRVL forums SolarSoda! You sound like you're definitely ready to start this new adventure however a month is not very much time to pare down your possessions and find a new home. It might be a bit stressful but we're here to help any way we can. You'll have a lot of decisions to make so please ask about anything and everything. Someone here will probably have the answers. Keep us updated!

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Thank you so much for extending the warm welcome! I will definitely take a gander at that Tips & Tricks post, I love that stuff. It's nice to finally make myself known here, I've been following along on the outskirts for so long, lol. And I know I am among good people here.  :D

You're right, needing to pare down on such short notice has been overwhelming to say the least. I've read a couple good articles about selling stuff through the social channels, and I have somewhat of a plan: whatever we don't sell through FB and Craigslist we'll take to a flea market, and whatever doesn't sell there we'll take to the thrift store. Luckily we already live in a smallish space, a mobile home, so we are starting out ahead. Sort of. Lol

Anyway, thanks for the help!  :)

Welcome aboard SolarSoda!
Your idea of getting a RV instead of a van will help with getting ready fast !
The build is already done !
Good luck with the quick sale of the excess baggage.

We'll want pics of the rig when you get it.......

:) We are neighbors, kinda.  Welcome!

I'm up here in LA, Lower AL.  Many things have slowed me down to a full nomadic life style.  One was not knowing what I would have to work with.  I kept putting things back in storage because I might "need" them.  In less than 4 mo. I've gone from a 1991 Ranger 4x4 that was/is a work in progress and A big Viking pop up that I had not been able to set up by myself in 4 years to a rig that I hope will filll my needs.. Now I have a 2004 Aliner pop up and a 1998 Safari hightop conversion van.  The hitch and helper springs are ordered and the van is being rigged for towing and hopefully in a month we will ready for some "baby trips". Other than small trailers to move with it's been many years since I've dragged something to live in behind me   :D

I think once you know what you have to work with the downsizing will be both easier and quicker.  Good luck with everything and safe travels.

@rvpopeye: I can't wait to post pics!

@Txjaybird: Hello neighbor!! I can TOTALLY relate on the "might need it someday" dynamic. I just got a storage unit yesterday and it scares me to think how I might fill it up, lol. And you are absolutely right about knowing what we have to work with and how it will affect downsizing. We already know what we're willing to get rid of (a lot), but we're having a tough time coming up with financing. I am anxious for this to be over with, lol.

I got my first travel trailer out of the classifieds,(some body's deer lease camper, $600 cash) rolled it as close to my apartment as I could, loaded it, with immediate needs, put the stuff I knew I could sell or 'might need' in storage, and just drove off, leaving the Walmart furniture there for the apt mgrs to move, serves them right for their dishonesty
lived in that RV with a tarp over it because the roof leaked for a year before upgrading lol

What a great story! To be honest, I kind of feel the same way you did, about leaving stuff behind for the new owners to deal with. The buyers' realtor was REALLY pushy. I mean, *REALLY*. She wanted us out by Dec. 23 - ! Dec. 23!! The seller's realtor told me he had to fight with her for a long time to get her to agree to give us 30 days after the sale was final. So I can totally relate to the "serves 'em right" mentality because that's how I feel. And it's not like it's our landlord's problem anymore, so she's not going to suffer for it. The mobile home was advertised "as is". LOL

But good for you for putting up with a leaky travel trailer, for any amount of time, but a year, wow! It's still better than handing over money for rent, eh? That's what I'm looking forward to. Even if we wind up making a monthly payment on an RV (leaky or not, lol) it will be a zillion times better - and cheaper - than what we're leaving behind. :)
